Evelyn Martha Shields went to be with her Lord and Savior, with her family by her side on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the South Health Campus in Calgary at the age of 89 years. Martha was born in Cereal, AB and raised in Oyen, AB. She attended the Holy Cross School of Nursing in Calgary, from which she graduated in February of 1954, and worked at the Oyen Hospital until her marriage to William Totzke on June 23, 1956.
Martha will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Cheryl (Gerry) Jantz and Melody (Andrew) Constantinidis; six grandchildren, Emily (Adam) Bedford, Evangeline Jantz, Graham Jantz, Emmanuel (Rachel) Constantinidis,Alexandra Constantinidis (Chris Carlile), Nathanael Constantinidis (Chantel Hertzsprung); and extended family and friends. Martha was predeceased by her husband, William, and survived by her brother James Shields and her sister Faith Kent.
Martha took great pleasure in her work as a nurse at Grace Hospital from 1960 – 1988, and working part time at Trinity Lodge from 1989-1991. She enjoyed her retirement and spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren, and travelling. Her family wishes to extend their thanks for the care and love Matha received at Staywell Manor over the last 5 years; their kindness and compassion for her made her final years joyful. Her family also wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Miller, the nurses, and the RTs in the emergeny room at the South Health Campus; the care and compassion they offered to our mother and to us in those final hours was overwhelming.
A Memorial Service will be held in Martha’s memory at the Richmond Baptist Church, 7251 Sierra Morena Blvd. SW, Calgary, AB on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha’s memory may be made to Agape Hospice, 1302 – 8th Ave. NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1B8.
