Minnie Roske (née Lamers)
January 8th, 2020
Minnie Roske (née Lamers) passed away on January 8, 2020 at Sunset Extendicare in Regina, SK. Minnie had the great fortune to live 104 years in good health.
Most of Minnie's life was spent in Saskatchewan. Her grade 1-12 education was received in Southey. In 1935, after Grade 12, she graduated from Regina Normal School. In July of the same year she began her teaching career in a rural school near her Southey-area farm home. In her first posting, most of the students came to school speaking only German, which was also Minnie's mother language. In the following years she taught in many rural schools, and eventually ended up working in Regina. After a total of 26 years of teaching she superannuated from the Regina Public School Board.
Following her working life as a teacher, Minnie moved with her husband Ron to Vernon, BC, where they kept a beautiful home in the suburbs, surrounded by apple orchards and framed by hills and mountains.
After 21 years, the couple returned to their native province and in 1993 settled in Southey. She lost her husband in 1997, and a few years later she moved into the Pioneer Lodge, a few blocks from her home.
Minnie, a very strong and active person all her life, greatly enjoyed the outdoors. She was an avid walker, and made countless hours on foot. Well into her mid-90's she could be seen going for long walks every day.
Among other interests were gardening, wildlife, boating, fishing, camping, collectibles, and travel.
Minnie was predeceased by her husband Ron, her parents, her brother Art in 1972, and her sister Martha in 2015. She is survived by her brother Albert, and by her sisters-in-law Lorna and Clarice. Also surviving her are numerous nephews and nieces, to whom Minnie was always a generous, interested, and kind aunt.
The family would like to recognize the kindness, generosity, and compassion shown to Minnie by the staff of Sunset Extendicare in Regina. They went outside the roles required in their jobs, to give her companionship and support during her years in that facility.
Following Minnie's wishes, there will be no funeral service held.
