Metody "Ted" Schabel
March 5th, 2020
Metody (Ted) Schabel was born on February 27, 1934 in the Pastoral District of Beckenham, Saskatchewan, the second child of Alex and Mary (nee Sereda) Schabel.
After his family moved to the Ituna area, Ted received both his elementary and high school education at Ituna School, graduating in 1954.
Ted began working at the Co-op Refinery in Regina in May of 1955. He started as a Lab Tester and advanced through all levels. In October of 1980, he certified as a Lab Technician 1, a position he held for the rest of his career. He married Maryann Basaraba from Two Hills, Alberta on June 27, 1959. They were blessed with five children. When they were expecting their third child, they moved into their lifelong home on Laird Crescent in Regina. While working full-time at the refinery, Ted also farmed his land in the Ituna area. The land still remains in the family. After a 41 year career at the Refinery, Ted retired in 1996.
Ted was a member of St. Athanasius Ukrainian Catholic Parish from 1971. He and Maryann were active in catering at the parish for many years. He served as the Hall Committee Chairman in 1977. Ted became a member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Budka Council in 1967, serving as Grand Knight in 1978, as well as other positions. As a knight, he was especially active in preparing and selling the Football Pool tickets right up until the 2019 football season. He was also a faithful bingo worker for many years.
Ted was an avid curler in his day, spending many hours at the Callie Curling Club in Regina. He was a long-time member at the original Callie Club and shareholder at its present location. He loved curling in bonspiels especially in Ituna. He also enjoyed playing poker, Kaiser, crib, golf, and pool, riding his old CCM bicycle, and watching Saskatchewan Roughrider football games. He faithfully read the Leader-Post from cover to cover every day. You could count on a heated discussion with Ted about anything political after he read the paper. In his last months in the hospital, daughter Brenda had to bring the paper to him daily and take them home to recycle when he was done.
Ted was a man who enjoyed people. He could talk to just about anyone about anything. He wasn’t always vocal about it, but he was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. He loved attending their hockey and soccer games whenever he could. He also enjoyed spending time with his siblings, in-laws, and their families.
Ted was predeceased by his wife Maryann; his parents Alex and Mary; sister Ann (in infancy); his brother Walter (Mary); parents-in-law Andrei and Veronica Basaraba; sisters-in-law Dianne Schebel, Violet King, Susan (Peter) Roshuk, Joan Murray; brothers-in-law Steve Basaraba, Metro Basaraba, Ted (Bev) Basaraba, Nick Basaraba, Lawrence Basaraba, William (Billy) Basaraba, niece Kim Harkness, and nephew Mark Schebel. He leaves to cherish his memory five children and six grandchildren: Shelley (Jeff) Harrick of Ituna, Brenda (Steve) of Regina, Diana (Kent) Krall and son Jeffrey of Regina, Matthew (Karen) of Regina and their sons Kyle and Chris, Michael (Joy) of White City and their daughters Denaira and Hope Prost and son Theo Schabel. The Chyrski Family expresses their sympathy and condolences to the children and grandchildren of Ted Schabel. Vichnaya Pamyat (Eternal Memory)
I am so sorry to hear that Ted has died. I personal did not see Ted for many years, since we were going to school together. Ted and his family were our neighbours at Ituna Sask. I personally want to offer my sympathy to the family, and the Bible hope that we could see Ted alive again as mention in the Bible at John 5:28,29, under God’s Kingdom rule.
