Thelma Schedlosky

October 22nd, 2022

It is with great sadness we announce that Thelma passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family near and far, on the morning of Saturday, October 22, 2022. Predeceased by her husband Dominic Schedlosky (2003), parents LG and Pearl Harley, brother Donald Harley and sister Myrna Harley. Thelma is survived by her children Jan Luba (Ron), Cheryl Stewart (Brian), David Schedlosky (Twyla), Cathryn Reid (Barry) and Michael Schedlosky (Karene). She was the proud grandmother to nine grandchildren, Mark and David Luba, Richelle Sleightholm (Luba), Trevis, Chad and Brett Stewart, Tyler,  Karlynn and Derek Reid, step granddaughter Dani Bigcharles and ten great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Brian Harley and sister-in-law Anne Losier.

Born and raised on a farm near Livelong, Sask., Thelma moved to Humboldt in 1951 to attend nurses training at St. Elizabeth Hospital where she graduated in 1954. It was here she met her husband Dominic Schedlosky and they settled into the farming community. They enjoyed many great times socializing with neighbors, playing Kaiser, going to dances and curling. Humboldt was home for the next 71 years.  Thelma was a model mother who worked nights as a Registered Nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital to pursue her nursing career while also being dedicated to raising her family. With an administrative certificate in hand, she moved to Assistant Director of Nursing before teaching homecare/special care aide for SIAST. Thelma then continued to live her passion as she overcame her fear of flying in small planes and would fly to remote northern communities as a nurse practitioner. As well she continued to teach First Aid, CPR, diabetes education courses and collect data for a U of S Lung Study. Her commitment in the field of nursing would earn her the Saskatchewan Centennial Diamond Award in 2017 for her “Six Decades of Caring”.

Thelma had many interests in life from being a proficient piano player, playing in a band, to competing in provincial track competitions in her youth. She developed many interests such as knitting, sewing, crocheting, quilting, ceramics, baking, cake decorating and photography. She enjoyed watching competitive curling and most of all playing golf with her group of lady friends. Thelma loved to travel and enjoyed meeting people wherever she went. She was an outgoing and active member of her community, organizing events, taking on challenges and extending her kindness by helping others in any way she could. Always generous with her time, she received national recognition as Volunteer of the Year by the Canadian Diabetic Association and a Citizen of the Year Award. Thelma cherished her many neighbors and friends whose friendships were truly important to her and she especially appreciated the many phone calls when she moved to Regina in May 2022. She loved visits from family and friends.

Thelma’s greatest pride and accomplishment in life was her devotion to family where she encouraged her children to follow their dreams and passions which she supported along the way. She was always making something special for her grandchildren whether a teddy bear, a quilt, sewing doll clothes or decorating cakes for special occasions. When she had a chance she would cuddle her great grandchildren on her knee and read to them. She herself was an avid reader and her learning would never stop. We will miss her endless energy, loving support and will forever cherish the wonderful memories.

“We know that we can’t have you but we’re happy knowing the Angels have finally got you back. Goodbye to a wonderful woman and a beautiful mother.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held in Humboldt in the spring of 2023.

Messages:

I am so sorry Thelma is no longer with us. She was a person you could truly be proud of. She was kind and helpful to many friends, I was happy and fortunate to be one of them. We had many good times golfing (coffee at McDonalds after). She was a good travel companion as well. I will miss her.

Thelma always amazed me how she handled working full time, raising 5 awesome children, being a farmers wife and volunteering for everything she believed in! She was an incredible woman and will be missed by everyone who knew her!

I had the privilege of spending time with Thelma, Alice and Olga as they reminisced about their days as students at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Thelma was a member of "The Fireballs of '54" during nursing training and truly was a fireball in real life. She will be greatly missed.

I’ve known and loved my cousin Thelma my entire life. She raised five great children who she was so proud of. My proudest moment was when she told me over the years I was the sister she didn’t have. The feeling was mutual.

Got to know Thelma when I was involved with the Diabetes Assn. She could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. Deepest condolences to her family… she will be missed!

Thelma was a beautiful and giving person. She would encourage and inspire anyone who was lucky enough to know her. Rest easy dear Thelma.

It is with a heavy heart that I offer my condolences to the family. Thelma was a great family friend and also great close friend. I am so glad she moved to Regina so I could spend more time with her. Will never forget the last hug when I tucked her in bed a couple weeks before she passed. Will always miss her.

My deepest sympathies to each of Thelma’s family. She really was one incredible lady. May she Rest In Peace.

Thelma was an amazing woman. We worked at St Elizabeth hospital together for many years. I always looked up to Thelma she was such a knowledgeable, caring person. We learned to golf together and had wonderful times on the course. When she left Humboldt she left a definite void in our lives. She will be missed. Our condolences to the family. You were so lucky to have such a wonderful mom.

So many great memories... sleepovers at the farm, sewing my crazy jacket with you, summer trips to Waskesiu, shopping trips to the states, homemade buns, cinnamon buns, candy popcorn, amazing birthday cakes. I will forever hold these memories close to my heart. Love you always and forever ❤️❤️

Sending much love and prayers to all the family. Aunt Thelma was a wonderful lady, and we will always cherish the beautiful memories of her. Was so happy I got to see her in Sept. as we had a nice visit. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days to come as you heal. Pat and Con

Our deepest sympathies to the family for the loss of your special Mom. She had a life well lived and was much beloved.

Thelma always treated us like family when we attended get togethers with everyone at Mike’s with Dave and my sister Twyla. A special lady who raised amazing, kind, funny and caring sons and daughters.

I am so grateful that we were able to see Thelma on Thanksgiving. I know that she has left a very big void in the family. We will treasure the memories that we have knowing that you are still there with us in our hearts. RIP Thelma ❤️❤️

Missing you every minute of everyday, but you’ll ALWAYS be with us, in our hearts and minds FOREVER
