Alexander James McDonald

December 6th, 2011

Alex (Mac) McDonald passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at the age of 97 years.

Alex was born on the family farm near Brandon, Manitoba, the first of six sons of William and Katherine. The war brought him west where he met the love of his life, Margaret. They settled in Alberta, living in Bassano and Cayley before moving to Bowness in 1954. He worked as a laborer until being hired by the City of Calgary first in sanitation, then maintenance at City Hall.

Alex was a quiet and gentle man. He loved to garden, talk with the birds, and travel, especially to Mexico and on cruises. Just this October, he was looking forward to a holiday to PV. He was a proud Mason and was made an Honorary Life Member of King George Lodge #59. His passion was music. From the time he was a lad he loved to play his fiddle, guitar, mouth-organ and later, auto-harp at home, church, old-folks homes and senior’s dances.

Alex is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret; sons Murray (Lily) and Tom; daughter Lori (David Little);  granddaughters Shawna-Seah and Tamara; brothers Lloyd and Jack (Peggy), and sister-in-law, Bernie, all of Manitoba, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Foothills United Church, 3803–69 Street NW, Calgary on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Alex’s name may be made to Foothills United Church, 3803 – 69 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T3B 2J9 or charity of your choice.

Although I never met Alex, I have known Margaret for 3 years as a member of the Calgals Red Hat Chapter. I am sending my thoughts and prayers to Margaret and all their family. Take care and may God Bless you.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Lori, and all her family. Jo-anne and I will always remember Mac and his fiddle. Stampede week was one of his favourite times.

I will always remember Mac as one of the kindest gentlest and most honorable men that I have ever known. It was a great privilege to have his friendship. He gave so much with his conversation, music and laughter. I am very sorry for your loss and especially for yours Margaret. With my love. Gordon
