Lilian Iris Newbert (nee Lasser)

November 6th, 2013

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Lilian Iris Newbert (nee Lasser) at Bethany Care, Airdrie, at the age of 91 years.  Lilian was born in Vancouver, B.C. on October 10, 1922 and spent her childhood in Squamish, B.C.   She was a daughter of Otto and Elise Lasser and sister to Bob, Freda, Rose, Anne and her twin Marge.  She attended Vancouver General Hospital’s Nursing School and graduated as a Registered Nurse.  Serving as a pediatric nurse on Vancouver Island, Lilian brightened the lives of children when they were at their most vulnerable.  She married Kurt Newbert who predeceased her in 2006.  She lived in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Edmonton, Alberta where she and Kurt raised their children.  Active in her community, Lilian will be remembered as a dear friend, as well as for her love of bowling, her incredible knitting skills and her lifelong willingness to help those less fortunate than her, including through volunteering with the Red Cross.  She remained active in the nursing community, keeping in touch with her former colleagues and supporting new generations of nurses through her support of the University of Alberta Nursing Program.  She was predeceased by her sisters, Freda, Rose and Anne and her brother Bob. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Judy (Ray) Muxworthy, her sons Ken (Marlie) Newbert and Alan (Lucy) Newbert, and her sister Marge of Parksville, B.C.  Lilian loved children, and was a wonderfully kind and loving grandmother. Her memory will always be treasured by her grandchildren, Elyse, Joel, and Eric Newbert. As per Lilian’s request she was cremated and no Funeral Service was held.  Thank-you to Dr. White and the staff at Bethany for their wonderful care.  A Celebration of Lilian’s life will be held in the spring at Parksville, B.C.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lilian's name to the Alzheimer's Society.
