William Henry Waddell

January 18th, 2013

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing, on January 18, 2013, of Bill Waddell surrounded by family at the Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore. He was born in Regina in 1926, the middle son of Dr. John and Ann Waddell. He is survived by his loving wife, Mona; his sons, Paul (Brenda) and Grant (Stephanie); stepsons, Lance (Loretta) Selby and Guy (Judy) Selby; stepdaughter, Patti (Les) Walkeden and his much loved grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Rebecca, Jessica, Hailey, Samantha and Samuel. He is also survived by his brother, Warren (Marie) in Kelowna and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Calvin, and granddaughter, Janel. Bill was a graduate of the University of Western Ontario (B.A.) and the University of Saskatchewan (B.Sc.M.Sc) and began his career in the oil industry as a geologist in 1956 working primarily in the sedimentary basin of western Canada. In the latter stages of his career he was the Senior Vice President of Home Oil and in the 10 years prior to his retirement he was President of CN Exploration.  Bill and Mona built their dream vacation home on the shores of Kootenay Lake in 1981 and their combined families enjoyed 21 years of great pleasure there. Bill enjoyed golfing at Kokanee Springs Golf Club, sailing his pride and joy “Sheerbliss” and skiing at various locations in Western Canada and the United States. While he enjoyed golf he could never achieve the mastery of the game and remained a “high handicapper” until the end of his golf career. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta, Westech Building, 102 – 5636 Burbank Cres. SE, Calgary, AB T2H 1Z6. At Bill’s request there will be no Memorial Service. A private family Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at a later date. Bill’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all the staff at Somerset for their care and compassion while he was a resident.

Dear Mona & Family: I met Bill in 1978 at the mid-point of my career as a geologist. He offered me a great job at Home Oil as a member of his "pathfinder" team, and rescued me from a low-paying government job in a rather monastic environment. He was fun to work with, and I'm sorry to hear of his passing. May the joy and fresh opportunity he brought to my life provide you with some solace during this difficult time.
