BERRETH, Katherine (Kay) (nee Beringer)
Kay Berreth of Calgary passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the South Health Campus surrounded by all five of her grandchildren, Don, Kathy, Tracy, Riley, Suzie; and great grandson, Colton. She is lovingly remembered by four other great grandchildren, Louis, Noah, Faren and Charley; in addition to two sisters, Diana Lindstrom and Esther Vermillion; and her very dear, dedicated niece, Jane Florence. She is predeceased by her husband, Otto; and her daughters, Patricia Brennan and Sheila Rehaume. Kay was born 31 January 1917 in Irvine, Alberta. As a young woman, she worked as a nurse’s aide at the Bassano Hospital. She married Otto Berreth in 1936 and in the mid '40s, they ran the Flaxcombe Hotel. It was during this time she discovered her love of curling. Among her many trophies, the highlights of her curling career included winning the 1965 Provincial Ladies Championship and a gold medal at the 1967 Canadian Winter Games. She kept busy in later years with sewing and crocheting, much of which she donated to hospitals and charities. She was an amazing baker and avid fan of all sports. Kay was blessed with a long and active life and will be remembered for her dedication and love of her family and loved ones. Even non-family called her "Grammy." We would like to recognize the love and assistance of Jennifer Madriaga and Albert Nguyen, and all the hardworking nurses and caregivers who helped her.
"This life for me has truly passed
I love you all to the very last
Weep not for me, but courage take
And love one another for my sake."
A Celebration of Kay’s Life will take place at the Calgary Curling Club, 720 – 3 Street NW, Calgary, AB on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.
If so desired, donations may be made in Kay’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5.

I first met Kay in 1960 (yes, on the curling ice at the Big 4). The following year, she asked me to curl with her --- was I ever thrilled. This started our friendship of over 50 years, and what a friendship. Kay taught me so so much about life, sewing, cooking, baking She was a wonderful Grammy to her Grandchildren, she was so proud of all of you. I will truly miss our long, long telephone visits, my gold plated friend is gone -- She will be missed. ,
