Scott Young – May 11, 1966

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, son, brother and friend, Scott Young. Scott passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021 at the Foothills Medical Center, Calgary, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Sydney Mines, he is the son of Joseph and Jean (Bradley) Young. Scott married his high school sweetheart, Kim Mulley, on July 15, 1989; celebrating 32 amazing years together. Scott worked in oil and gas, eventually moving to Airdrie Alberta in 2008. After his family, travel and sports were his passions.

Scott completed his dream trip to Tahiti in 2019. He has been to baseball games in 16 stadiums, highlighted by seeing his Red Sox at Fenway Park. Scott loved watching and coaching his son Marc play all sports. He coached hockey, soccer, and golf but his crowning achievement was back to back High School volleyball Provincial Championships.

Scott was heavily involved at the Airdrie United Church as the Chairman of the Board, spearheading the new Building Development. He was always there with a one liner, dry wit, tongue out, or striking a highland pose to make everyone smile.

Scott is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kimberlee; son, Marc, in Columbus, Ohio; his parents, Joseph and Jean (Bradley) Young; his younger siblings, Nicole (John) Whitty in P.E.I, Robert (Sherri) Young in P.E.I; and his sisters-in-law, Marlene McLean, Irene Hill, Colleen Roberts; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Airdrie United Church Building Development, 212 – 1 Avenue NE, Airdrie, Alberta, T4B 0R4. A Memorial will be held at a later date in Sydney Mines.

Messages:

I am so shocked I learn of Scott’s passing having met him at a church service at Airdrie Anglican Church , we chatted about our days at Parkland and he was excited to see me. Scott is a devout Christian and very compassionate and respectful person , he will surely be missed. My condolences to his family for this great loss

To Kim, Marc and all Scott's family, Our deepest condolences to you all. Our thoughts and prayers have been with you these past few weeks. Kim, I've been going through old photos of growing up together, your wedding and Marc when he was born. I can't believe how much time has passed. I know you never expected for Scott to be gone so soon but you lived a very full life together, surrounded by lots of love with great memories. I will often think of Scott, posing in the first step of the Highland Fling, mischievously smiling at the camera, in exotic places that you travelled, at a sports stadium somewhere or simply, enjoying each other's company in your backyard garden. Scott will be remembered most for all the love he gave you and Marc. We will miss him. Love to you all, and to you especially cuz, Love Leanne & Jeff, Breagh & Aislinn Beddow

Shocked and very sad when I found out the news today that Scott had passed away. Scott and i worked together for a number of years from when Bluewave went Went West to in the last few years before my retirement when he was my Boss, Scott had a amazing way of dealing with his team in good times and bad, respect was always there. We did a lot of travelling across this country together, BC, Alberta, Ontario and the Atlantic regions and one thing always happened once we had booked into our Hotel, he would ask " Where is the Italian restaurant" as he needed his Chicken Parmesan. On a number of My trips to Calgary Kim would join us for supper which was always great. Although we both left Parkland a couple of years ago, we never lost touch and had our telephone calls every month or so to catch up. Will miss them. To Kim and Mark, please take care of yourselves, you are in my thoughts. Phil

Kim-I was so sorry to read this today and hoping you’re doing okay. Make sure you take care of yourself. Sending lots of positive energy.

From Zellers, to the softball fields, to Acadia University, to Baddeck Forks Golf Course, Scott and I spent a lot of time together in the mid to late 80’s. Time and distance separated us, but the laughs and memories with Scott remain with me. Scott was my first roommate at Acadia in 1985-86, Room 121 Dennis House to be exact, he was my Campus GPS for the first week of classes, if not for Scott, I would have been looking for a Physics lab in the Arts building. He and I and the rest of the Acadia gang (Neil, Marc, Rick, Randy, James…) never missed a home Acadia varsity hockey, basketball, or football game. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, we all shared together. I still have goofy photos from Scott and Kim’s wedding of Neil d’Entremont, Scott, and myself in our tuxedos in baseball poses. Silly? Yes. But that was Scott’s personality. On his wedding day, we had to find time for these non-professional photos. I always felt my sarcasm was best matched by Scott’s dry wit. Scott and James McClean wrote a review for the Dennis House Newsletter after every Dennis House Whalers intramural hockey game, an example of his wit: he coined the nickname for me of Darren Dennis, M.D. for my hockey skills, the M.D. didn’t stand for Medical Doctor as one would hope, it stood for Master of Disaster. His devotion to his beloved Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Flyers led to many mini heartbreaks for Scott, especially the 1986 World Series (reference Bill Buckner/ground ball/through the legs). Right now, I imagine Scott is talking baseball with Red Sox legend Ted Williams, probably offering him left-handed batting tips. Kim, you were certainly the most important person in Scott’s world back then, he counted the days down for your Acadia visits, I’m not surprised at the great life you enjoyed together. Kim, Marc, Jean, Joe, Nicole, Robert, and families, I extend my deepest condolences to you. Godspeed J. Scott Young Godspeed! Darren

On behalf of the United Church of Canada, I offer our condolences for your loss. Scott’s work with Airdrie UC was greatly appreciated and his faithful leadership will be missed. Please know that our prayers are with you during this challenging time. Treena Duncan, Executive Minister, United Church of Canada.

My sincerest condolences to Kim, Marc and the entire family. Scott and I worked very closely together for many years at Bluewave and Parkland and I have so many wonderful memories of working side by side with Scott, including a great picture of me wearing a Red Sox Jersey around the office for a day due to losing a bet to Scott. Did he ever move his Sox! He was an amazing colleague and friend. Our thoughts are with all of you Tom, Siona, Olivia and Thomas

Hi Kim, I was so saddened to hear of Scott's passing. I have known him for many years but really got to know Scott while I was in Calgary working side by side with him in our Harvest Hills cubicles and travelling around Alberta. We shared many laughs and good times together. I loved his great energy and wonderful sense of humour. I couldn't appreciate much how he liked his steak blackened and well done like a hockey puck which was a brunt of a few of our jokes. Jenny and I send our love to you, Mark and the rest of your extended family. Take care and god bless.

My deepest sympathies. Scott was a great guy and I have fond memories of our time together at Memorial. So sorry to hear of his passing.

Absolutely devastated for you Kim and Mark. Brian and I had the pleasure of hanging out with Scott at their high school reunion and he had me in stitches the entire night. We are sending you huge hugs.

My sincerest condolences to the Young family. I had the absolute pleasure of working with Scott and always looked forward to our conversations. Our last meeting was by video and Scott was sitting in his office with a backdrop of all of his sports memorabilia. I asked Scott what the story was and he treated me to a tour of his collection and told me about some of the amazing trips that he had taken to build his collection. Scott had a smile that would put anyone in a good mood. I will truly miss him.
