Janice Carol Hanna
November 12th, 1959 ~ June 12th, 2024
Janice was a mother, hockey mom, grandmother, sister, aunt, activist, unionist and friend to many. She was determined to overcome her recent cancer diagnosis but sadly on June 12th, she passed peacefully at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta.
Janice was born at VGH, the youngest child of six. She was predeceased by her parents Margaret and Harold Hanna, sisters Maureen and Glennis, brother-in-law Richard and nephew Scott. She is survived by her loving son Alex Peters (Gillian), granddaughters Rae and Vilolet, siblings Grace (Richard), Pam and Chad (Karen), Alex’s father Brooke, many nieces, nephews and lifelong childhood friends.
Janice graduated from Kitsilano High School near the family home on West 12th Avenue in Vancouver. After two years at UBC she was hired by the Workers’ Compensation Board, where she spent her entire career of over 35 years, retiring as a pensions adjudicator in 2015. She was also a proud and active member of her union, serving in several executive capacities.
Janice loved life, and being a grandma to her granddaughters Rae and Violet. She cherished her family and doted on her cats and many dogs. She was quick witted, sharp as a tack, and kept her sense of humour right up to the end. She was a great conversationalist and always had strong opinions on politics. A conversation with Janice was never short, nor short on her spirited opinions about governments and politicians of every stripe. Janice lived her life on her own terms. We will miss her wonderful smile, her laugh, her love and optimism, dog stories and keen sense of humour.
A celebration of life is planned for Friday, August 16 in Crescent Beach. Please contact a family member for details.
Please leave messages of condolence, or share memories below.
Messages:
Janice was a friend, confidant and cousin. We had many conversations, phone calls, emails and laughs and tears about losing family members. We both shared a love of dogs. Janice shared many pictures and videos of Alex, Gillian, Rae and Violet. Janice will forever leave a special place in my heart.
I was fortunate to not only know Janice as a coworker for many years but also have her as a dear and cherished friend. I will miss our regular (lengthy) phone chats and dog walks. My deepest condolences to her beloved son, Alex, daughter in-law Gillian and her granddaughters Rae and Violet.
I met Janice when she was 7 years old (I was dating her older sister). Later in life, I helped her as a lawyer. Spunky woman. I loved her dedication to the union. Rest in peace, Janice.
So very sorry to hear of Janice passing. I have fond memories of Janice in many of my classes back in high school. RIP.
Janice became part of our family pretty much the same time that Alex did. We will sorely miss her friendship and family get togethers just won’t be the same without her. RIP Janice, you deserve it!!
I’m so sorry to hear of Janice’s passing. I worked with Janice for many years at WorkSafe and always enjoyed our chats. Rest in Peace Janice, you will be missed.
