Kevin Matwick

October 17th, 2013

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Kevin after a short but valiant battle with melanoma.  He is lovingly remembered and forever missed by his wife of 19 years, Leesa, and the greatest joys of his life, daughter Riley and son Joby.  Predeceased by his father Vic, we take comfort in knowing Kevin and Dad are in Heaven together.  Kevin will also be dearly missed by his mom Laura, stepdad Joe, brothers Howard, Mike, “Big” Joby, sister Patty and his many other relatives, dear friends and colleagues.

Kevin was a dedicated father and loved spending time with Leesa and the kids enjoying many activities such as playing Scrabble, hiking, biking, camping and walking on the beach.  Geocaching in exotic places became the family hobby.  Having run 13 marathons, including Boston, he was well prepared for the adventures! “Glamping” at WM holds some of our favourite memories with Kevin.  No matter what he set his mind to, he always approached everything as a goal to achieve, and to do his very best at it.  Realizing early on he wanted to wear a suit to work, he began his career in banking.  After a decade with the bank, he began his career in Surety, where he enjoyed 23 years in the industry - 19 years with AXA then in 2009 moving to Jardine Lloyd Thompson. Kevin ended his career as Vice President, Account Executive.  Passionate about his career, Kevin took great pride in providing the best in customer care and service.  He made many friends throughout his years in Surety and was well respected by all.  His wry sense of humour and his joy at being a prankster always kept us smiling.  Kevin’s undeniable work ethic and integrity have been a role model for everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.  The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many dear friends, neighbours, Pastor Stan, cancer teams in N.Van and SMH, and specifically the loving and caring palliative team at Laurel Place Hospice – words cannot express the thanks and love we have felt from you all over this difficult year.

A memorial service will be held at Sonrise Church, 5588 – 188th Street, Surrey on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at 2:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, a donation in Kevin’s memory to Laurel Place Hospice or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation for Melanoma Research would be appreciated.

You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence for the family.

Messages:

I met Kevin only a few years ago and it is surreal that he is not with us anymore. He was a vibrant, intelligent, quiet man with a slightly sarcastic humor. It was a pleasure to be around him. His devotion to his family was so obvious. I admired his patience, his positive parenting skills. He was such a positive role model to his kids, always loving and respectful with Leesa and I thought they had the perfect little family. I envied him for finishing 13 marathons. I only did a half marathon and let me tell you! That shows dedication, self discipline, character, strength. He demonstrated these characteristics to the end, to the last finish line......He will be missed by all! My thoughts are with you Leesa , Joby and Riley.

Kevin and I had been keeping in touch by texting over the past 7 months. He hadn't replied to my last 2 messages and then I heard he had taken a turn for the worst. I had a message ready to send that could be read to him, but found out from Leesa that he had passed on earlier that day.... To my best friend Kevin: We've known each other for almost 30 years and I am thankful for our special friendship. Thinking of the times we had together (even 20 years later) always brings a smile to my face. To call you "my best friend" is so inadequate, there are no words that express what you mean to me. When you were ready to start a new chapter of your life, I let you go knowing you were in good hands with Leesa and that you would have the family life you dreamt of. Once again I find myself letting you go. I know we will meet again. You are in my heart forever. LB

So sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine what you have been through. My thoughts and my heart goes out to you.

Dear Leesa and family, we were saddened to hear about Kevin. We wish you and your family strength and peace. We had the pleasure only a few times to get together with you and Kevin and always enjoyed seeing you. Take care and our thoughts are with you. Daryl and Patricia Miller
