Oliver Alex Helm

Oliver passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital
on Saturday, April 28, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of
80 years. Oliver is lovingly remembered by his threedaughters; Janice (Wayne
Hager), Verness (Grant) Grover and
Teresa (Jeff) Radics,one stepson Randy
Matthews, eight grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, and long time close
companion Dicksie; two sisters and two brothers. He was predeceased by his parents, one
brother; Elmer, one sister Cleava, his first grandson; Trevor and his 2nd wife
Yvonne. He also leaves many nieces,
nephews, in-laws and friends who loved him. Oliver Alexander Helm was born June
28, 1931 at Reid Hill, Alberta to John & Madeleine Helm of Caroline. Oliver
grew up on on the farm at Caroline working on the land, milking cows and doing
chores. He was on a threshing crew at
age 14 and working winters in "the bush". He went to school at Wooler
completing 9 grades in 8 years while helping with school fires, cutting
firewood & carrying water. At age
18, he went to Calgary where he worked for Horne & Pitfield, then for Peter
Hume (Beatty appliances) & finally for Sears for 35 years in every capacity
including managerial. Oliver and his 2nd
wife Yvonne bought land adjacent to the place where he was raised and it was
there they retired in 1986. Their home
and the beautiful surroundings welcomed many guests, family and friends over
the years. A celebration of Oliver's life was held at the Innisfail Legion on
Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial
donations can be made to, The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer Benefiting
Alberta Cancer Foundation 375 - 605 - 1st Street SW Calgary, AB T2P 3S9 or to the charity of the donors
choice. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of unit 32, palliative
care for the wonderful care provided to Oliver during his illness.
