Marie Catherine Babott

October 29th, 2013

It is with deep sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Mom / Granni. Predeceased by husband Joseph and son William. Marie is survived by sons Mike (Cheryl 1), Dick (Donna), Dan (Cheryl 2), Tim (Traci), Patrick (Cheryl 3) as well as 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren numerous nieces and nephews.  Marie was born the middle child of a large family of 8 children and lived her entire life in Calgary. Family was the greatest joy in her life and she was blessed to have a large and extended family that included many friends that she treated as family.  Those who knew her will always treasure her sharp, quick wit along with her enjoyment of engaging in conversation and story telling.  Marie had recently lost much of her sight and was less mobile but still found ways to make new friends and help others. She had been volunteering her time to teach new Canadians conversational English, although not all of her words were from a dictionary such as, “jim-dandy”. Humour was a big part of Marie’s life and all her sons have been blessed with the same sense of humour, she made most people laugh no matter what the circumstance and enjoyed a good laugh herself. Over the years Marie worked for CFCN, Grace Hospital, and the Calgary Board of Education. Marie’s hobbies included knitting, crocheting, painting, paper tole, ceramics, puzzle building, playing cards and word and number puzzles. Marie’s family is grateful to all the Homecare workers and the Aspen Lodge staff for taking such great care of her. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Southwood United Church, 10690 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary on Saturday November 9th, 2013 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Marie’s memory may be made to the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind), 15 Colonel Baker Place NE, Calgary, AB, T2E 4Z3.

Still think of you often up there Granni. With a heavy heart I regret not catching up to you with my boys to see you for one more hug and a lasting good laugh. Miss you and your outlooks.. oxO

Aunty Marie, I see you up in heaven having a few chuckles with dad. Your vision is perfect and you are both breathing easy. I can't tell who is winning the crib game but it doesn't matter. Well, maybe it does matter to dad. God bless you both. Linda

We are so sorry we couldn't make it to the celebration. Auntie was a big part of our lives growing up. We had so many happy times and happy memories. We send our love and our thoughts. We hope to see you soon and wanted to let you know that we have made a donation in her name to the CNIB.

We have many happy memories with Marie over the years at Babott family gatherings, curling trips to name a few. She was a great lady and will be missed by all who loved and knew her. Our thoughts are with the family. Regards Cliff and Barb

I will miss Marie. She was a light in my life and I loved our talks. I have had the privilege of painting with Marie even though she thought that painting was a thing of the past for her. It is because of Marie that I have two ladies at the new site I work at are both painting .One of the ladies is completely blind, when I told her about Marie she decided to try to paint aswell. Marie and I would meet in the mornings and we would talk ,sometimes about all of her children and how much she loved you all. She would tease and say how easy it was to remember all the daughter-in-laws and how she appreciated them. When I left Aspen she was one of the hardest to say goodbye to, her great humor, her wise words are things that I will always hold dear to my heart. Once again goodbye my friend,

Donna and Dick, so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May your happy memories of your mother stay with you always. Billy and Gwen Schykawy

To the family and friends who so loved Marie, my condolences. I so respected Auntie Marie and she had a wonderful sense of humor. I was not in touch with the family for awhile but reconnected recently and am so glad that I did. I will cherish you auntie and know that you have found peace. Love Teresa B.
