Dear Helen, Cathy, Jim, Yolanda and Family, I am sadly moved by the news of Gus’ passing. Seeing his handsome photo in the newspaper brought back a flood of kind memories. Through my years of working at National Travel, Gus was a father, mentor and friend to me. He will always be my role model for the best of what God made in a person: thoughtful and generous, humble and a charming sense of humour. Gus had a handful of jokes that he never grew tired of re-telling and no one ever laughed harder than Gus himself. Every day was a new day for Gus! As an employer, he had unquestioning respect for his staff. He trusted our integrity and believed in our best qualities…..despite our shortcomings! Gus worked long, intense days in the demanding travel industry. Regardless of how long the back-log of phone calls or waiting clients, each person that walked in the door was made to feel the most important thing in his day. I remember a little Thai restaurant opened on 17 Avenue: a new sort of cuisine for Calgary in the early 80’s! On the very first day that the restaurant opened, at noon hour Gus announced: “ We’re closing the office!” Gus paraded all of us to over there for a wonderful lunch. The husband and wife owner were most appreciative! When we were leaving, I noticed Gus very quietly take the husband aside, and slip a crisp $100 bill in his hand. He said, “ This will bring your restaurant good luck”. It was these little gestures that made Gus such a mighty human being. Gus was ageless and timeless; he found joy in most things that he touched. He loved his family immensely and enjoyed his friends endlessly. I shall always cherish his goodness, quiet laugh and smiling eyes. My heart felt sadness for our loss, Jeannie Minchin

Dear Helen and family. Our thoughts, love and prayers are whith you all at this most difficult time.

It was with great sadness that I read of Gus's passing this week. From early on in my career in the travel industry it was evident that Gus was a one of a kind individual. He was a true gentleman who always had time for those of us who were just beginning our careers. There was no-one who knew more about Europe and Greece and he was always willing to share that knowledge. Our industry has lost a dear soul. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of your family.
