UPTON, John H.
December 15, 1922 – Edmonton, AB
April 6, 2015 – Calgary, AB
After having spent hardly any time in hospital throughout his life, John died after a number of weeks at Rockyview General Hospital. Born in Edmonton, he moved to Calgary with his parents and older brother at the age of six months. Growing up on College Lane, he had a happy childhood, attending Earl Grey, Rideau Park and Western Canada High School.
Signing up with the R.C.A.F. in 1942 as a flight navigator, John served in both Europe and the Far East. Europe was particularly eventful as in November 1943, his Whitley, Mk V went down in Central France, and through a series of fortuitous circumstances, John was eventually able to escape into Spain. Friendships acquired at that time have continued to this day.
After the war, John had a career in accounting, working for a time in the oil industry, ATCO Industries and culminating with Revenue Canada. John enjoyed curling and golf, and travelled back to Europe, Ontario, the American South West and British Columbia.
John is survived by his son, Len; and daughter, Vickie. He is predeceased by his parents; wife, May; grandson, Evan and brother, Bill.
At John’s request, there will be no Funeral Service.
