SUTHERLAND, Robert George Watson “Scotty”
Robert George Watson “Scotty” Sutherland passed away at the age of 92 years on December 22, 2016 at Michener Extended Care in Red Deer where he had resided for the last 3 years. Scotty was born on October 10, 1924 in Didsbury, AB, the eldest son of David and Winifred Sutherland. He grew up on the family homestead in Westward Ho and attended the Inverness School along with his sisters Fiona, Moira and brother, David. In 1943 he signed up with the Royal Canadian Air Force and spent two years in service during WWII in England and the Philippines with a Liberator Bomber Squadron as Flight Sergeant. Upon his return, he met and married Gertie (Spencer). In 1946 they purchased their farm in Elkton where they raised their family of six. Farming was Scotty’s first love and he would spend countless hours with his Jersey and Charolais cattle. However, during the tough farming times Scotty worked the drilling rigs, drove truck and worked as a carpenter.
Scotty is lovingly remembered by his children, Bev (Art) Regner, Shirley Harkness, Gayle Sutherland and friend Troy, Deb (Dan) Chalupa, Rob Sutherland and friend Anne, Donna (Chris) Heck; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; his two sisters, Fiona Morton and Moira Rawlings; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Gertie (2014); his grandson, Kyle (1995); his parents; and his brother, David.
Scotty will be remembered for his sense of humor, his joke gifts, nicknames for all of those who touched his life, his hard work, and his love for his family and his farm!
A Celebration of Scotty’s Life will be held at the Knox United Church in Didsbury, AB on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Scotty’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
