It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, and uncle, Ron of Didsbury, Alberta. Born in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec; Ronald lived the majority of his life throughout Manitoba, the Yukon and Alberta. He spent his early childhood years on the family farm near Plumas, Manitoba. As a young man Ron earned himself quite a reputation, one of his nicknames being “Capone” as he was well known in the area for his rebel attitude which followed him throughout his life. Ron was always the one to take the path less travelled, and always stuck to his principles regardless of if they were accepted by others or not. Ron loved playing sports in his youth, he excelled at both Hockey and Baseball and has passed these passions and talents on to his son, Kevin; grandson Carson; and great nephew, Nicholas. He has spent countless hours in the arena and ball field watching these boys over the years. Ron also loved to pick at and antagonize his granddaughter Kayla, where she was always quick to return the banter.
Ron began working in the underground mining industry in his youth and continued doing so off and on over the next 40 years of his life. He met Carol Schettler and in 1970 they married in Thompson, Manitoba and eventually moved to Whitehorse, Yukon; where their son Kevin was born. In the Yukon Ron loved hunting, fishing and placer gold mining and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor life. He owned a floor covering business for these 30 years and between flooring and mining, still managed to fit in his passion for an ice cold beer. He thrived in the north which is where many of Ron’s stories originated. Those who had a chance to listen to Ron’s stories knew him to be one of the best storytellers around. Ron really knew how to make you feel like you were right there with him on one of his crazy adventures, and some of them really were crazy. Ron loved reading and was an avid visitor to the local libraries. Another of Ron’s passion was playing Texas Hold ‘Em poker; he loved the game and spent many an evening in his “second living room” the casino; chasing the perfect flop. He loved the land and often spent many hours watching wildlife.
Ron is survived by his son Kevin (April), grandchildren Kayla, Carson (Nicholas, Justin, Caden), his brother Mel (Marlene), his sister Wendy (Claire) and many nieces and nephews. Ron is predeceased by his wife Carol, mother Clara, father George and brother Ricky. At Ron’s request, no funeral services will be held. A Celebration of Life for Ron will be determined by family at a later date.
Ron may this be just the start of your journey; may it lead you to all the perfect flops, bulls-eye shots, fish filled nets and rivers of gold nuggets and may you walk again with all those held dearest to you. You will always hold a special place in our hearts and will be fondly remembered for all the laughter and joy you brought into our lives. We will love you always and will miss you dearly. Until we meet again…..
