LARTER, Marland

It is with great sadness that the family of Marland Larter of Stavely, AB (formerly Picture Butte, AB) announces that he passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017 after a very courageous battle with prostate cancer at the age of 73.

Marland was born in the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge on May 27, 1944 and raised on the Larter family farm near Iron Springs. At an early age, Marland discovered a love of music, developing his talents playing guitar, piano, and accordion as well as singing.  Beginning in his teen years, he was in several bands playing for dances across Southern Alberta.

Marland’s early years were dedicated to 4H culminating in winning the award to represent Alberta at the 36th International 4H Conference in Washington DC in 1966. In 1970, Marland married the love of his life, Marilyn.  As a couple, they worked side by side in the cattle business developing Larter Feeders custom feedlot at Picture Butte.  He continued his commitment to the livestock industry by being on the board for the Alberta Cattle Feeders Association for 16 years serving as president 1990, 1991.  Marland was proud to carry on feeding cattle for 30 plus years, celebrating over 100 years on the family homestead.

After selling the farm in 2007, Marland moved on to new adventures as a snow bird in Arizona, a custom hauler in the oilfield industry near Lloydminster, as well as assisting family and friends in farming near Vermillion and Stavely.

Family was very important to Marland.  He was proud of his relationship with his wife Marilyn and the accomplishments of his daughters.  Marland loved watching his family grow through marriage and grandchildren creating many happy memories along the way.

Marland is lovingly remembered by his family, beloved wife, Marilyn of 47 years; daughters, Karen of Turner Valley, AB, Kathryn (Tyson) Warawa their children Ethan, Aspen, and Kadyn of Dewberry, AB, and Jodi (Paul) Husted, their children Delaney and Burke of Stavely, AB; uncle, Dr. E.N. Larter of Winnipeg; mother-in-law, Shirley Christie of Lethbridge; brothers-in-law, Bob (Peggy) Christie and Bill (Frances) Christie; sisters-in-law, Carol (Rod) Dand and JoAnne (Bob) Duncan; as well as numerous other cousins, relatives and a host of friends. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Stan and Margaret Larter; sister and brother-in-law, Lil and Sherman Dunk; father-in-law, Herb Christie; and sister-in-law Joan Christie.

Marland’s parting wish was for family and friends to love each other and continue making memories. A Celebration of Marland's Life will be held at the Stavely Community Center, on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 3:00 pm.

Marilyn and family. We were so saddened to hear about Marland's passing. I met you both in the first couple of days of my RCMP career while working out of Nanton and I so enjoyed my patrols to Stavely and to your home and the auction mart. I was particularly drawn to Marland because of his musical talents and his cheerful character. Marland and Marilyn made my transition into a (Queen's) cowboy so much easier. He made this world a better place just by being who he was. Thank you for that, Marland, and rest in peace, my friend.

I was sorry to hear of Marland's passing--he was a valued customer of mine who turned into a good friend. We shared some good times together along with your family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this sad time. Sincerely, Dennis
