William "Wayne" Lucas
March 16th, 2017
LUCAS, William “Wayne”
William Wayne Lucas took his last ride across the Great Divide on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the age of 69. He was on born on May 10, 1947 in Vulcan, Alberta to Bill and Opal Lucas.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Judy; his children, Marla (Maury) and their children, Ashton, Amanda and Reegan; Brett (Caro) and children, Chance, Zack and Felicity; Flint (Elise) and their children, Sutton and Maybry; and Rustin (Aaron) and their children, Conner, Colson, and a coming addition due in the fall; and sister, Marlane Valentine (Don). He was a terrific uncle to many nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his parents and infant brother.
Wayne grew up and attended school in Vulcan. He married the love of his life, Judy, on August 14, 1971. In 1974, they settled on their own piece of paradise in the Porcupine Hills, west of Claresholm. It was here that they spent their life, raising horses, cattle and their four children. Wayne valued his family above all else and his family’s passions became his passions. This showed in the leadership roles that he took in 4-H horse and beef clubs, and director of high school rodeo. He also played key roles in both the Appaloosa and Percheron Horse Clubs. Cherishing his neighbors and friends, he was a strong believer in the power of working together. Wayne enjoyed branding season where he could gather ‘em, heel ‘em, and was an expert with the irons. Wayne was always up for a chance to help friends and neighbors and have a good time afterwards. Team roping was a passion of Wayne’s and he participated in the sport up until his passing.
The family invites you to join them for a Celebration of Wayne’s Life at the Claresholm Community Centre on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be in Wayne’s memory to the Claresholm and District Health Foundation, PO Box 2638, Claresholm, AB, T0L 0T0 (https//www.cdhealth.ca).

thanks sir wayne for the nice ridings we have togheter ,see you again
I was surprised and deeply saddened to learn of Wayne's passing. To Judy and all the family my deepest condolences. Wayne was a superior and dedicated horseman and his influence will not soon be forgotten. Thanks Wayne!
Dearest Judy and family. I was so very sorry to hear of Wayne's passing. One of the best experiences of my life was with Wayne and you Judy in the fall of 2008 on the "roundup". I stuck to Wayne like glue on the trail and he teased me about that. I told him I didn't want to get lost so I was not letting him out of my site. Wayne was so very kind, funny and patient. I think our 2 day ride turned into 4 and I would not trade my experience for all the money in the world. Another great time was traveling to Southern California to watch Wayne judge a Draft Horse Show and spend a little more time with the two of you. I still have the kitten I took home from the ranch and was proud to name him Lucas after Wayne and Judy. Wayne rode off into the sunset. He may not be here in our world but he is in a place where he feels no pain and can ride forever. Judy, he will be there to meet you when it is your time to enter his world and you will be together forever. I hope your pain will ease with time but know Wayne is still with you.
Dear Judy and Family, It is with great sorrow that we heard of Wayne's Passing. we were unable to come to the service as Bud was not well. He will be missed by many for his sense of humour his willing way to help others. we enjoyed many visits with him at horse shows and agriculture venues. He even managed to have time to pop into the Golden Age Show to say HI.There is no way to lessen the sorrow of losing someone so precious to you. But please remember others care very much and wigh you comfort at this sad time. Hugs ALice and Bud Wyatt
Sudden and sad news! We were all so lucky to have had Wayne in our lives - always ready for a little fun and that twinkle in his eye gave it away! Our hearts hurt for Judy and the rest of the family. Please know that we share in this sorrow but know that only time will help lift the burden of grief. The Webster family extends their sincere condolences to the Lucas Family at this difficult time. And we will cherish the memories we made together. Love from Tony and Deb Webster
Dear Judy and family: my thoughts are with you a lot. It was ten years ago I first visited the ranch and got to know you all. Wayne was not a man of many words, but when he said something: you'd better listen. During these ten years I have visited the ranch five times and everytime you all made me feel so very welcome. Wayne always made sure I had a good horse to ride and a good saddle to sit in (very important on the long rides). He was a good person, a familyman, a true ranchman, a good horseman and good with people. Hope to see you soon again, with lots of love: Maria
We were very sorry that we were unable to attend Wayne's funeral and to give our sincere condolences to Judy and all the family, in person. It is so nice that you have shared his slide show on-line and and we could through those beautiful pictures, to be thankful that he had a life well lived.
Judy and family , what a shocker . We are so very sorry to hear of your loss. It's been far to long and now to late for another visit . We think of you often and cherish our memories of the ranch visits , trail rides and horse shows . Where have the years gone . You are in our thoughts and prayers . Just found out today April 2 . What a great tribute watched on fb
Judy & Family; Marlane & Family, I am truly shocked hear of Waynes passing...way too young! Just thinking back to the school bus rides, 4-H Club and neighboring farms as kids growing up. How quickly the time passes! I remember Wayne's love of horses, raising cattle and his work ethic. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Love & Blessings Always! Beverley
Deepest condolences to all the Lucas family....Wayne was a great guy.....lots of awesome memories from the Appaloosa shows
Our condolences to Judy and family. Wayne was a great 4H leader and friend. We know our Dad /husband ( Don Jess ) really valued his friendship and knowledge when he started working with Percherons.
Connie and I are very sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. So many people admired him for his honest friendship and his great community spirit. This is a great memory I have of Wayne. It will be 20 years ago this August that Wayne and I won the amateur team roping at the Fort Macleod Highwood Auction at Aldersyde which was held as a customer appreciation event. The way it unfolded was like one of those once in a lifetime experiences that just happen and work out better than if they had been planned. To start with Wayne and I got partnered up at the very last minute. We had 2 head the first day and I messed up heading so we only got one time. I felt bad because Wayne was throwing some great heel shots. I went home after the meal but Wayne stayed for the Calcutta. Later in the evening I got a surprise call from Wayne saying we made it into the buckle round in last spot on our one head and we owned ourselves in the Calcutta. We sold pretty low. Anyway our fortunes improved greatly the next day. I managed to turn both head for Wayne who made a couple of his textbook clean shots. The results were that we won the event and we each received one of those coveted buckles that Highwood Auction was known for plus we won the calcutta. Wayne’s obituary makes mention of the importance of his family in his life. I learned a real great example of his family values after this event occurred. As years have gone by whenever we have met one or the other of us would ask the other how his buckle is doing. On several occasions he would tell me that his buckle was at home and the buckle he was wearing was one he won with one of his boys. I thought that really says a lot about Wayne’s values and where his heart was at. Hearing him say that has really stuck with me through the years and I had no doubt of the love he had for his family. Again Judy and family please accept our condolences for your loss of Wayne. He was involved in so many things that his loss will be felt by many friends. Wayne was always a great friend to me and I treasured this special bond with him.
Gone far too soon! To Judy and her family and their families, my sincere condolences. May all the good memories bring joy to your hearts in this difficult time. Wayne was a true friend, always available for a good visit at Stampede time while showing his Percherons, a tough competitor at the Appaloosa shows, and a superb guide when we spent time at your vacation ranch. He was a great person and one who will be sorrowfully missed.

May you find peace in the days ahead in you cherished memories and knowing Wayne will always be remembered fondly by those near and far.
Our hearts are truly saddened by your extremely sad news of Wayne's passing! Things just won't be the same in our neighborhood without ol' Wayne!
