Steve Alva Marko
July 28th, 2018
It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our dear and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Steve Marko.
Steve entered into the field of construction in the early seventies, becoming very respected in the industry first in the area of home building then progressing to infrastructure and roadwork. His talents took him across Canada then expanding to international sites, Turkey, Israel and eventually ending with Fluor Daniel in the USA. He was most proud of being a member of “the team” constructing the historic Confederation Bridge linking PEI to mainland New Brunswick. He was there at ground breaking through the years to completion. His dedication, energy and work ethic were phenomenal and a fine example to the young people he mentored as well as those he worked with and family members.
Steve was born to Alva and Ruth Marko, he wed his beloved wife Sarah (nee Dickson) on December 10, 1966, his forever love, who felt proud and privileged to be his partner in his life’s journey and survives him. Steve is also survived by his sons, Clint, Alva (Michelle); daughter, Stephanie Guenette (Pete); grandchildren, Jordan, Tegan and Mathieu Guenette, Caitlin and Logan Marko; mother-in-law Goldie Dickson (in her103 year); five brothers; one sister, and many nieces and nephews. Steve was predeceased by his parents and father-in-law James Dickson, one brother, and two sisters.
Steve’s accomplishments were many within his community of Strathmore he was the recipient of a silver medal at the Alberta Summer Games for golf in the 80’s as well as getting a hole in one which also occurred in the 80’s.
His earlier years as a young dad resulted in him being involved in Strathmore minor ball as Coordinator, Vice President & Coach and taking on the role of President of minor hockey. The involvement of minor sports lead him into committee work seeing him sitting on many boards and also lead to his role as Project Manager and Coordinator for the Strathmore Golf Club in the construction of a new clubhouse.
Steve was a member of the Strathmore Masonic Lodge, Past Master, Eastern Star Past Patron, Strathmore Golf Club, and Calgary Edgemont Racket Club. His leisure saw him enjoying time with family, as well as Golf, Squash, Baseball and Reading.
As a family we have been privileged and awed to have witnessed his endeavors and achievements we continue to follow his lead in doing our very best and “measuring up”.
Well done to a life well lived.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Evangelical Missionary Church, AB-582, Mountain View County, Alberta, on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 1:00pm. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Steve’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 119 14 St NW #200, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.
Messages:
Fair winds and following seas Uncle Steve. My condolences and best wishes for the family.
I worked with Steve on the SH 130 design build highway project in Austin, Texas. I was one of the segment managers and Steve was the Structures Manager. I learned a lot from Steve and I always appreciated his approach to construction, and his approach to life. Steve was always pushing to improve the process and the people around him. Steve's presence made the project better, and I'm thankful I got to know him, and he will be remembered and missed. Pat Pluenneke
He was an honest, hard working (mostly self taught) man. I loved him dearly. I will miss him. Love and prayers to you all.
On behalf of the Ballast Nedam employees who were involved in the construction of the Confederation Bridge
It was an honour and a pleasure to have met Steve and to be fortunate enough to have worked with him at his favourite Project - namely the Bridge. Condolences from my family to yours!
Peace and Blessings to the entire Marko family. Rob Bauhuis, Tracey, Matthieu, and Ella
My first memory of Steve was of him getting me involved in organized baseball. He also invited me to play raquetball, and I distinctly remember missing the ball and smashing him on the side of the head! Ouch!! In my college years, he asked me to build him a small headed golf driver with a huge grip, so I did. It took 10 wraps of duct tape under the grip to match Steve's 3x-large hands, and both Brian Bassen and I spent half an hour putting those grips on! My Dad always enjoyed golfing with Steve at the crack of dawn. They could always play 9 holes in under an hour. I doubt Steve ever got the recognition he deserved for building the new Strathmore Golf Club clubhouse, especially when it was designed to accommodate the curling club. If you admire people who got things done, then, I figure you probably liked Steve. I certainly was saddened to hear of his passing. My most sincere condolences to his whole family.
