Johanna "Anne" Petronella Marsh

June 14th, 2018

Anne was born in Holland and her family immigrated to Canada when she was 18 months old.  They settled near Strathmore and eventually made their way to the farm west of Carstairs. Farming was in her blood.  She married Art Marsh in 1946 and together they took over his family farm east of Carstairs.  She knew the hard work of “farm wife “.  She worked in the fields, milked cows by hand, grew a huge garden and raised three children.

In the early 60s, Art figured they needed a new house but she wanted a new barn.  He won, but she did get her barn too.

After Art passed away, she developed some “back issues" so she moved into Carstairs in 1993 where she resided up until her passing.

She was fiercely independent right until the very end.  She did all her own housework, shoveled the snow from her driveway and sidewalks in Winter (people in town may not have known her by name but they knew her as the lady that had her snow shoveled before many others were even out of bed), planted a few vegetables and flowers in the Spring, and mowed her own lawn in Summer.  When weather permitted, she tried to walk at least a mile each day.  That is what she was doing when she fell and broke her wrist and a couple of ribs six days before her passing.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Marsh; daughter, Jessie (Brian) Goodfellow; and son, Don (Darlene) Marsh; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Anne was predeceased by her parents,  Casey and Cora Klys; her husband, Art; and her son, Ken; as well as all of her siblings.

A Come and Go Celebration of Life was held at the Carstairs Half Century Club, 1139 Osler Street, on Sunday, June 24th from 1-5 pm. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.myalternatives.ca
