Budgeon, Fred

Fred Budgeon, in his 82nd year, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at the Foothills Medical Centre.   He was born to the late Ralph Budgeon and Grace Brubacher Budgeon on February 8, 1937 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Fred spent the first two years of his life in Bon Accord, Alberta then the family moved to Crossfield to take over the farm from Ralph’s parents, Fred and Elsie Budgeon.  After studying Mechanics and Metal Working at S.A.I.T., Fred returned to the farm where he started to expand the business to include his own grain operation and cattle feedlot.

During this time, he met Myrna Smaha at a dance hall in Calgary.  On November 18, 1961 Myrna and Fred married and settled on the farm north of Crossfield where they lived until they moved to town in 1999.

Fred was a great lover of music which he played on the saxophone, guitar, piano and if dared, the violin.  He also enjoyed sports such as golf, football, curling, trapshooting, volleyball and skiing.   Myrna and Fred travelled extensively throughout the world including; South America, parts of Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, U.K., a safari in Africa and of course Canada.

Fred will be remembered for his community involvement with organizations such as the Elks, Crossfield Minor Hockey, Collicut Siding Golf Course, the old Crossfield Community Hall, the building committee of the new Crossfield Community Center, Crossfield Golden Key Club, Crossfield History Book and the Crossfield Legion.

Fred will be lovingly remembered by his children Grant (Kathy), Shelley and Matthew; and two grand- daughters, Sydney and Hilary, and extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his wife Myrna and sister Patricia.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Crossfield Community Center on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army, 420 – 9 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0R9 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 100, 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.

The family wish to thank the community for their generosity and support, as well at the local fire department and paramedics for their quick response and knowledgeable assistance.  The family also expresses sincere appreciation for the care extended to Fred by the staff at the Foothills Medical Center, particularly the ER.

Deepest Sympathy to the Budgeon family

So sorry to hear of Fred’s passing. He will be sorely missed.

It is with great sadness that I have learned about the passing of Fred. Having met Fred in 1988, and being 27 years my senior, I always looked up to and admired the astute, determined and hard working business man that he was. But his kind heartedness, supportiveness and great sense of humor made him a great delight to be around as well. Fred sure loved a good laugh, which I can still hear in my head now, and never passed up an opportunity to joke around with strangers in a line-up or at the next table in a restaurant. Fred, you were a great man and will be dearly missed.

Grant and family, Shelley and Matthew : Our parents were neighbors and good friends, consequently, I have known Fred all my life. Of course, we went to Crossfield School together. Myrna was the best thing that every happened to Fred and together they were great community contributors and supporters. As well, they were the best of farmers. Fred had a quick wit and was always very willing to help everyone at a moments notice. All of you will miss him terribly. Remember ALL the GOOD TIMES! Terry and I send our most sincere condolences.
