Edward John Dick
May 11th, 2019
Edward John Dick passed peacefully into his eternal home with Jesus at the age of 76 years on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 6:00 PM, while in Rosedale Hospice with family present.
Ed was born June 18, 1942 in Coaldale, Alberta to Elizabeth (Wiebe) and Isaac Peter Dick, the first of their four children.
Ed’s young life was rarely stagnant; his family moved from Alberta to the Swift Current area, then to Burns Lake, BC, where his parents helped start a Mennonite church that initially met in their home. It was near there, at Ootsa Lake Bible Camp, that he committed his life to Christ. When he was in his late teens the family returned to Swift Current, SK, where he was baptised at Zion Mennonite Church, and completed high school in 1960. He moved to Regina to attend Teacher’s College and then taught one year at Balgonie School. His next teaching position was in Dalmeny, SK. He returned to University in Saskatoon where he met his wife Dorothy.
While doing dishes at a church young adults gathering, Dorothy Hamm caught his eye. After she proved she could hold her own in a rousing match of tea-towel snapping, he couldn’t help but offer the pretty lady a fast ride home. They were married July 23, 1966.
In 1967 Ed accepted a position with the Calgary Board of Education as a junior high science and math teacher, and he remained with the CBE until his retirement in June of 1997.
He was involved in the Christian Motorcyclists Association, serving as the Calgary chapter’s first president, was a ski jumping official for many years, and skied and played softball throughout his life, playing ball until three months prior to his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his children, Kevin & Sandra (Geddes) Dick, Philip Dick, and Patricia (Dick) & Gary Sonnenberg; his five grandchildren, Emily, Noah, Levi, Timothy and Chloe; and by his three younger siblings, Elmer Dick, Kenneth Dick, and Loretta Dick & Mesfin Gebremariam.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Isaac Dick.
The Memorial Service for Edward will be held at Foothills Mennonite Church (2115 Urbana Road NW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 2:00 PM. Erwin Strempler and Chad Miller will officiate. A reception will follow immediately in the church’s fellowship hall.

Dorothy and family, Please accept my condolences on the passing of Ed. I considered him a kindred spirit because we both shared a passion for teaching, motorcycles, softball and of course our faith. But Ed was better than me in some respects because when I felt frustrated with the policies of the CBE it got to me, but Ed was able to deal with these type of issues much more calmly. I always appreciated and admired his smile and positive attitude and I will miss him. John Piera
