Barbara Leone Hunter
June 22nd, 2019
Barbara Leone Hunter, née Flarity of Airdrie, AB in her 67th year, passed away in hospice in Calgary, AB. on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 with her family around her.
Born in Oxenden, Ontario, Barb was the youngest of 4 children, born to a hard-working fisherman father and hairdressing mother. She spent her childhood playing in the creek, befriending animals and playing piano.
After graduating high school and obtaining her nursing certificate she ventured over to Europe, backpacking with friends and then returned home to marry Joseph (Reginald) Hunter and migrated west to Edmonton.
Having a daughter (Theresa) then moving to a farm in Bonnyville, AB., she tended to the garden, raised livestock and then had two sons (Michael and Casey) and after being a homemaker for several years, decided to return to work taking up a position in the Gerontology Unit in the Bonnyville hospital.
After divorce and moving to Airdrie, AB, she continued to work with the elderly at the Bethany Care Society until her retirement and then volunteering after.
Barb was a compassionate, kind and patient soul, always thinking of others and making the best of every situation. She enjoyed several hobbies throughout her lifetime which included, reading, puzzles, painting, playing the piano, colouring, being outdoors and watching movies. She adored her dog (Buddy) and her cat (Thomas).
After a bout with cancer, Barb developed pulmonary fibroses and spent her last 5 years on oxygen, not letting that stop her from enjoying life to the fullest, she traveled, spent time with friends and was able to watch her grandchildren graduate high school.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Theresa (Travis) McCracken; sons, Michael and Casey Hunter and grandchildren, Julie and Jonah of Airdrie, AB.
Lovingly remembered by sister in law, Leone Flarity, Milton, ON.; brother, Peter of Paisley ON.; and brother, Dick, (Brenda) of Pt. Elgin. ON. Predeceased by her parents, Doris and Reeve Flarity, oldest brother Houston, and infant niece, Patty.
Her family would like to personally thank all of Barbs caregivers, specialists, and staff at both AgeCare Sagewood in Strathmore and Intercare Chinook Hospice in Calgary. We would also like to thank both Corrie White and Haley Brietzke. You both meant the world to our mother and your friendship throughout the years was worth more than you will ever know.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Barb’s name to your local animal rescue. Barb’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Best Western, Airdrie in the Diamond Room on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm MST.
She will be sadly missed by all who’s hearts she touched.

My condolences goes out to Barb's family. She was a fantastic friend and a wonderful co-worker to be with. I will miss her dearly. I will also miss helping her with her clock when she needed to change her batteries.... She was a very hard working lady and I enjoyed the time I have had to know her. Rest in peace my dear friend..
We are truly sorry to hear about Barb‘s passing and send love and strength to you. My fondest memory of Barb is sitting in her camping chair on top of the embankment leading to the lake, with a book in her hand and Buddy at her feet. I‘d like to imagine she is sitting wherever she went just like that, peaceful and happy just to watch over her family with her faithful little companion at her side. Lots of Love! Glad we got out to see her when we did, Really appreciative of all the wonderful care you provided for her while she was with you. We mourn for your mom as well, but we will not grieve too long, knowing she is with her Saviour now and forever. Your mom will be a great loss, time is a wonderful healer. The Lord bless you all with his comfort and strength.
I was saddened to read of Barbara's passing. My sincere condolences to her family. We spent our summers at my grandpa Searles' cottage next to the Flarity's. We spent a lot of time along the creek, hiking down the road, or just hanging around. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
