November 7, 1936 - January 30, 2019
Don was a born and bred Manitoba farm boy and that is where his heart always was.
Don moved to Alberta as a young man and started working on the bridge in Millarville. He was then recruited by Duke Drilling and spent years working in the Oilpatch as a driller.
He then met and married Sylvia Gilbertson in 1957. They were married for 54 years until her death in 2011.
He had a second career working in Calgary in the glass industry first at Nu-Vue Glass and retired from Crystal Glass.
Following his retirement, Don and Syb moved to Airdrie and resided there for 12 years. Don then moved to Okotoks and resided at Heartland Seniors residence. Don passed away surrounded by his loved ones at the Foothills Country Hospice on January 30, 2019.
Don was an expert trap shooter, and shotgun gunsmith and vendor. He sold shotguns at hundreds of gun shows across Alberta over the past 30 years. He was a member of the Layalta Gun Club for many years. Don loved to spend time with family, fishing, snowmobiling and of course shooting gophers. Many farmers were particularly grateful for his expert marksmanship. Gophers not so much.
Don leaves behind his three loving daughters, Cindy Burk(Phil), Cheryl Brandford(Bryan) and Tammie Rhodes(Jeff) and grandchildren Breighanne, Kirby, Bryce and Shealeigh. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Velaine in 2009, and his brother Blaine in 2000.
He also sadly leaves behind his sister Jean, brothers Elmer and Barry(Tannis) and numerous nieces and nephews, in Manitoba.

I met Don and Sylvia through their daughter Tammy. We instantly hit it off. I stayed in touch over the years in Airdrie. I had great chats with Don about Real Estate. I am grateful to have met two wonderful people. My deepest condolences to the family.
Another treasured family member gone to join the “crew”, missed by many. Greg spent many hours “talking guns & hunting” with Don. Sending condolences to all, share those many happy memories.
My sincerest condolences to all the family (Cindy, Chery, Tammie et al). He will be dearly missed by all. I really wish I could come to share my condolences in person; however, I have to work tomorrow, so will be unable to be there. My condolence to you all in Don’s passing. We all know it was for the best as he has been struggling for sometime. Roy and Don had a lot of good times hunting gophers and talking guns. They are likely talking over their good times as we speak. Will miss his visits to the farm. My family will miss him too. They always like to come visit with him. Robin always liked him shooting those damn gophers and enjoyed taking to him about his last gopher hunt. Robin was amazed how he still was such a good shot. Rest In Peace Don.

I had the fortunate opportunity to spend many holidays with Don. He was a loving and caring father and grandfather and will surely be missed. My condolences to all.
I met Don when I was involved with Calgary Fish & Game Assoc. Don organized a shooting night at the Sarcee military base range, one night a week. Tammy, Don, my daughter Jodi and I shot every week. When we moved to the farm Don and I shot many gophers. We made 2 one week trips to Saskatchewan to shoot gophers. We would each shoot 1/2 case of ammo. Happy Trails old friend.
