John (Jack) Richard Hurst

March 29th, 2020

John (Jack) Hurst passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 29, 2020 at the age of 63, along with his wife, Marilyn de Jesus.

Jack was born in Calgary, Alberta and spent his childhood years between Calgary and Port Hilford, Nova Scotia. After graduating from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, he took up a career as a Petroleum Landman and went on to be a partner of Antelope Land Services. He worked as a Petroleum Landman for over 30 years, a career he loved. He was well known for being a skilled negotiator, who was fair and patient. Jack was always there to help out when he could, or offer his opinion when called upon with both grace and humour.

In 1983, Jack married his first wife, Glenna, and together they proudly raised their two children just outside of Calgary. Early on, they enjoyed travelling, entertaining, the mountains and working on the acreage.

After the passing of Glenna in 2014, Jack wed Marilyn de Jesus in 2019. They had many adventures together, including hiking and travelling. When he could, Jack would spend summer days fly-fishing, one of his most loved hobbies, and fondly regaled about his fishing excursions with his family and friends.

Jack was a kind, wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and will be sorely missed by his children, Jamie (Andrew), Sean (Amy) and grandson, Austin; as well as his stepfather; Greg; stepchildren, Isabel (Quinten) and Miguel; sister, Cathie (Tom); brothers-in-law, Dale, Erwin (Rita), Wayne (Debbie) and Alvin (Bonita); and many extended family and friends.

Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Glenna; his parents, Vernon and Jean; his mother-in-law, Olga; sister, Susan; and sister-in-law, Sheryl.

Jack will be remembered for his tenacity, humour and generosity. He proudly spent the last few years of his life in his new element, being a grandfather. He was looking forward to taking his grandson Austin on his first fishing trip this summer.

A good man who has left us too soon, Jack will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends and forever missed. A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.

Messages:

Jack was a dear life-long friend of mine who will be profoundly missed. My heart goes out to Jamie and Sean, who may not remember me and my family in Vancouver, but we hold you both close to our hearts. My daughter Jess(ica) fondly recalls her first year in residence at the University of Victoria, with Jamie as the floor prefect. My wife Joan(ie) has warm memories of our two families down at Point Roberts catching crabs on a low-tide and cooking them up in the summer cabin Jack rented. Who knew this would be the start of Jack's passion for fishing? Jack stayed with us one June on his way to a Pacific Ocean fishing lodge, and we as always really enjoyed his visit. Sue, my memories of you date back to Henry Wisewood High School days, and I know you were always there for your younger brother. I hope all of you, including those I have not mentioned, will life live to its fullest in honour of our courageous man Jack, I know I will. Sincerely, David Christie, Vancouver, BC, Canada
