Margaret Lynne Johns

March 3rd, 2020

Margaret Lynne Johns (Fisher) passed away March 3, 2020 at the Foothills Medical Centre after a sudden illness at the age of 68. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years Terry, her two sons Trevor (Olivia), Ryan (Dianne) and her four grandchildren Megan, Karson, Sarah, and Braeden. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Peggy Fisher, in-laws Bruce and Meta Johns, and uncle and aunt Jack and Ruth Beatty. She was born in Regina Saskatchewan, and then moved with her mother to Calgary, Alberta where she lived until adulthood. She met and married Terry Johns in 1969 and had Trevor in 1970. Ryan was born in 1973. They initially lived in Calgary and moved to Airdrie in 1972 where they stayed until 1989 while the boys grew up. In Airdrie Marg was a founding member of the Airdrie Agricultural Society, an active volunteer with the boy’s schools, and a very busy hockey (Trevor) and multiple sports (Ryan) Mom. The family moved back to Calgary in 1989.

She started to work for TD bank in 1977 as a typist teller and stayed with them for 26 years, working her way up to Bank Manager in 1993. At that time, she and Terry moved to St. Paul, Alberta for her first managerial job and they averaged a move every two years until they moved to Brooks in 2010. They lived in Hanna (twice), Mayerthorpe, Vermillion, Two Hills, and Rimbey. With all these moves Marg and Terry made countless friends and acquaintances and they enjoyed their times in all of these unique and proud Alberta towns. In 2003 Marg was transitioned to ATB and continued with them until her retirement in 2015 and was proud of her almost 40 years in the banking industry. Marg was also actively involved with the Lions Club of Canada, the Hanna Agricultural Society, and the Dino Trailer Good Sam Club.

Marg loved travelling with Terry. They were able to travel south for many winters to multiple sub tropical hots spots. They were also able to spend a lot more time camping in their trailer and spending time at the family cabin in Invermere with family and friends which she cherished.

Marg became a serious golfer in her middle age and regularly won best ball tourneys because of her long drive skills. She also routinely beat her husband and sons much to their chagrin. Upon Marg’s retirement she reprised her role of hockey Mom and became a very serious hockey fan of the Brooks Bandits. She and Terry were very proud to billet Alex Roberts #10 of the Brooks Bandits for 3 years.

Marg was very devoted to and protective of her own two sons, but also demanded the best of them. The boys loved to push her buttons to make her laugh, or get her exasperated with their shenanigans. There was never a doubt about her unconditional love. She finally got her two daughters, Olivia and Dianne, whom she adored and stated repeatedly that she’d keep them over the two boys.

She was thrilled to be a grandmother and loved to attend all of the grandkids activities as they grew up. She was so proud of them and she loved living vicariously through all of their achievements, travels, adventures and dating lives. She was excited about their opportunities to live their lives to their fullest.

We can’t forget her pets. Mom loved her dogs. Cassius, Becky, Tucker, Mia, Thandie and her grand pups. They all were spoiled with luxurious, treat-filled lives and always had the best food and accommodations.

Mom was married to her husband and best friend for 50 years. Their relationship started when they were teenagers and they grew up while they were having kids. They were both completely devoted to each other and when the boys left home, they were finally able to rediscover and develop their love and friendship that at times had to be put on hold while they were raising their boys.

To describe Marg the one word the comes to mind is Fiery. She was an auburn haired second-generation Irish-Canadian lass that always wore her emotions on her sleeve. You always knew how Mom was doing, and what she was thinking. When she was younger, she loved to dance, throw the baseball with the boys, play hockey, and could run, ski, and skate like the wind. She was usually one of the ringleaders with her group of hockey Moms when they got up to their own shenanigans. It’s not well known but Mom was a voracious reader. She also loved a good party, or dance, and didn’t mind a good rum.

Over the last 3 years Marg battled many serious health issues and soldiered on doggedly. She had just started to aquacise and was thrilled to be able to start working out again. She was excited about the future which made her sudden passing all the more devastating. Mom was only 68 years old and recently stated she had a lot of life yet to live. Looking back, she lived her life well.

The family would like to thank Brooks EMS, The Brooks Hospital, and the Foothills Medical Centre, Cardiac Care Unit, for all of their efforts made to keep her with us.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Brooks United Church, 507 - 3rd Ave. West, Brooks, AB, on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Brooks and District Health Foundation.

Messages:

It was a wonderful opportunity to have met Marg and Terry. My Mother was proud of meeting her niece! I know had Mom lived longer she would have made Marg a much greater part of her life! I looked forward to Marg's letters and hoped that we could have shared more of Marg and Terry's lives in the future. She was a great lady!, Our deepest sympathy to the whole family; her husband, sons and grandchildren!

It was with great shock and sadness that we learned of Margs sudden passing. Marg Johns was a very special Lady. There were no strangers in Marg's world, only friends she hadn't met yet. Dick and I were two of those lucky strangers. We met Marg and Terry when Marg was transferred to the ATB in Two Hills Ab. Marg and Terry made their temporary home at our motel "The Junction Inn" until their home became available. When Marg entered a room it was like someone opened a window and let sunlight in, her happy and generous personality bathed everyone it touched with warmth. The legacy she left, wasn't just her loving family, her husband, children grandchildren it was all the lives she touched, doing the job she loved and excelled at in and outside the Banking Community, always helping those who needed her. Thank you Marg, for your gift of friendship you will be forever remembered and missed.

Our family has known in Marg, Terry, Trevor and Ryan for many years after we moved to Airdrie in 1989. We spend many fun filled times with the family. Our sincere condolences to all of you. Marg was a wonderful person with a heart of gold.

This message is for Terry Johns. Terry, I was deeply saddened to hear of Marg's passing. I was married to Alan (Ted) Engel for about 16 years. As you recall, our life was turned upside down when Ted was in a near-fatal car accident. He and I are in touch and he told me about Marg, or Margie as I liked to call her. I just wanted to say that I hope you will be okay and that I will always remember Margie. I told Ted that Marg was one of my favourite people from his "friends" group. She was vivacious, funny, loving, caring, had a great disposition and most important of all, as far as I am concerned, she was "down to earth". I never felt there was anything pretentious about Margie. What you saw was what you got and that is as it should be. And I could tell, even when the boys were still quite young, that she was a Mom extraordinaire! I always felt comfortable around Marg and thought she was easy to talk to. I am sorry I lost touch over the years but I still wanted to convey my condolences Terry. Please know that I am thinking of you and hope that, as time passes, you will have happy memories of Margie. No one can ever take away our memories.

My condolences to Margaret's family. The White family shares your loss as Margaret was our cousin and I (Warren) was born in the same year as Margaret. Our Mother Patricia Fisher, would speak often of Margaret when we were children. The one photograph we had was cherished. We only connected later life and in so doing rejoiced in getting to know Margaret and her family. Wishing you all the very best of blessings.

My heart goes out to Terry and family. I worked with Marg during my time at ATB in Hanna and she was a lovely woman who loved those close to her deeply. I became close with Marg and Terry and would have supper with them often as they became my “extended” family. Sending all my love and support in this difficult time.

We will be forever grateful to Marg and Terry for taking in, and taking care of, Alex during his three seasons with the Bandits. We wish to express our sincerest condolences to Terry and the family.

I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Marg's passing at such a young age. While we cousins in Ontario, were unable to stay in touch as often as we might have liked, we are still connected in thought. I remember Marg as being a happy, spit-fire of a woman who clearly loved and supported her family as the obituary above stated. It is a lovely tribute that paints a clear picture of her life, her loves and her interests. My sympathies go out to Terry, Trevor, Ryan and their respective families.
