Margaret Nickel passed away at the Southwood Hospice in Calgary, AB, on Friday, November 6, 2020, at the age of 78 years with her devoted husband of 59 years, Jacob Nickel (81 years), by her side.
Margaret will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her three sons, Kelly (Heather), James (Jeanne), and Richard (Teresa); only daughter, Rachelle (Campbell); seven grandchildren, Landon (Julia), Nicole (Chris), Cody (Janice), Michael, Catherine (Rene), and Jacob; five great-grandchildren, Aliya, Nathan, Emily, Kailey, and Blake, along with numerous cousins and extended family, including sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews as well as many dear friends.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Murray and Pauline McCuaig.
Margaret was born in Rockglen, SK. Her family moved to Princeton, BC, when she was young. She met Jacob at his brother’s wedding in Vernon, BC, when she was 14. She married Jacob in Keremeos, BC, in 1960, and they moved to Vernon, BC, right after, where eldest son, Kelly, was born in 1963, followed by middle son, James, in 1965. They then moved to Calgary, AB, in the summer of 1969, where youngest son, Richard, was born in 1971, followed by daughter, Rachelle, in 1973. Margaret and Jacob remained in Calgary until her passing.
Margaret was a devout Jehovah’s Witness all of her life, and she treasured time spent with her brothers and sisters in faith in loyal service to Jehovah God.
She was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, talented at everything she tackled from sewing and gardening to baking and cooking. She was self-employed for many years as an in-demand house cleaner and enjoyed working into her seventies.
She loved road trips and visited many places, including Toronto, Arizona, and Bethel, New York.
Her friendly, generous nature along with her quick wit and beautiful laugh drew people to her, and she could light up any room with her sparkle.
Special thanks go out to everyone who offered help and brought food during Margaret’s illness in the last year and a half before finally being diagnosed with stage IV cancer just weeks before her death.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Southwood Hospice who tried to make her last two days on Earth as comfortable as possible.

I’m sorry for your loss, uncle Jake, and my cousins. She was a lovely lady, I’ve only seen her with a pleasant outlook, positive thinking, even during her painful illness. I liked the phrase “sparkle” as well. Very appropriate. She will be missed. How thankful for the hope of the resurrection, and the day when Jehovah will call, and she will answer.

I had the privilege of growing up very close to Aunt Margaret, we lived right next door in the same House (duplex). I remember her very well as a caring person who never seemed to get upset at us kids, I think there was at least 4 of us then, when we would be buzzing around being kids. As well she always seemed to be a spiritual person who gave of herself, to her family, and to her god Jehovah. She will be missed, but her name is well known with Jehovah, and how precious that is, he won't forget! Heb. 6:10
Uncle Jake and Family, That is truly a beautiful picture of her, and I loved the line about her bringing sparkle into a room..perfect! I don’t know if I ever told her this but she was one of my favourite and coolest aunts. Whenever we came to Calgary to visit, we always did something new with you because you had cool gadgets...us country bumpkins.
My sincerest condolences to the entire family. I've had the pleasure of meeting and knowing her only daughter Rachelle over the past few years - what a marvelous woman, gentle, kind, and loving. And while I don't subscribe to any religion, my thoughts are with the family as they grieve her loss. Whether she resides in heaven or on another plane, saying goodbye to those we've loved through death and grieving is so hard. I wish for you all to have peace in your hearts. Namaste
It’s with a very heavy heart that we are writing this message today. Our prayers and thoughts are with Jacob, Richard, his wife, Rachelle and the all the family members. As you well know, your wife, mom, grandmother was a very kind and loving person. Her smile could light a room. I can remember right from my childhood how kind and welcoming she was to everyone. We hope that you can take comfort during your time of loss, as we did, in the knowledge of the many people who are thinking of you now and in the hope of seeing her again.
