Stan Turner
November 8th, 2020
It is with great sorrow that we announce Stan Turner beloved companion, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many passed away Sunday, November 8, 2020.
Stan was the second son of Queenie Mae and James Turner from England. He grew up in the West End of Winnipeg with his brothers, Leslie, Ron and Robert (Bob). He married Evelyn White in 1952 and together they have three children - Brian, Kim and Vanessa.
Stan lived an interesting and long life and will be remembered for his sense of humor, strong work ethic and his belief in giving back to the community which included serving as Commercial Director/Western Canada for the Canadian Real Estate Association.
He achieved his FRI (Fellow Real Estate Institute of Canada) in 1980, which led to him serving as a Director on both the Calgary and National boards over the years. He was a Founding Member/Officer of Calgary Association of Industrial Realtors (CAIR).
He thoroughly enjoyed his time as a Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB) instructor passing along his knowledge and keen interest in Industrial Real Estate, Industrial Leasing and how to work that darned Financial Calculator.
Stan was an Honorary Executive Member of the Calgary Executive Association/International and was an active member and Past President of the Airways Business Association.
Active member and past president of the Beltline Community Association from May 1999 to Spring 2001 during which he published the community newspaper. Stan was instrumental in turning the association around. Working along with Alderman Sue Higgins, he worked hard to save the Memorial Park Library. He was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee medal in 2003 presented by Colleen Klein, nominated by MLA Harvey Cenaiko. He did all this while being President/Owner of S.S. Turner Real Estate Corporation from 1979 - 2012.
Stan started in real estate in Winnipeg in 1967 selling residential properties. He quickly moved into a management position with one of the largest real estate firms in Winnipeg in the early 70s, Aronovitch and Leipsic. Stan led the way to Calgary in 1976 by accepting a position as Western Canada Regional Real Estate Manager with Canada Trust which saw him overseeing real estate operations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
As Broker/Owner of S.S. Turner Real Estate, Stan owned and operated a Century 21 and a Realty World franchise in the 1980s, but he gradually concentrated on the commercial/industrial side of real estate and conducted most of his business in the north east sector of Calgary.
Prior to his career in real estate Stan showed his self-starter attitude, strong work ethic and independent spirit by owning and publishing several weekly newspapers in both Winnipeg and small towns in southern Manitoba; he most enjoyed his time spent establishing and publishing the Beausejour Beaver.
Stan was a lifelong learner, enjoyed meeting and interacting with people and had a soft spot for animals and nature.
While saddened, we are uplifted by memories of his many stories, his kindness, his generosity and his love of family and friends.
He is lovingly remembered by his children, Brian Turner, Kim Turner (Robert Kodak) and Vanessa Turner (Terry Brooke); grandson, Lee Turner Kodak; brother, Robert Turner; special friend and companion, Cindy Graham; and Cindy's daughter, Deb Graham.
Stan leaves behind memories of a life well lived and a man well loved.
In lieu of flowers and service, donations to the Alzheimer Society, 800, 7015 MacLeod Trail SW, Calgary, AB T2H 2K6 can be made as a gesture of condolence.
Messages:
My condolences to Stan's family and particularly his friend Cindy. I remember Stan as a great guy and a real community leader. He was instrumental in the revival of the Connaught Community Association (in Calgary) in the late 90s and early 2000s, which ultimately led to great change in the Beltline. His newspaper experience led to the creation of an awesome community newspaper, the Connaught (later Beltline) Outlook; there was really nothing like it in Calgary before or since. We need more guys like Stan!
I was very sorry to learn of Stan's passing. Stan was a respected and dedicated member and past President of the Airways Business Association and was a vocal supporter of the spirit of entrepreneurship that ran through its membership. He was very well-liked and I personally enjoyed Stan's jovial nature very much. Those were good years and I know Stan would say the very same thing. I'm privileged to have called him my good friend. He'll be missed. My sincere condolences to all of Stan's Family. Bill Cummings
I worked with Stanley for many years at S.S Turner Real Estate in Calgary. Back in the 70's we were very successful in penetrating the commercial real estate market in Spokane Washington & were a force to be reckoned with & respected by our U.S counterparts. Stan's integrity, total honesty & dedication to his profession was unquestioned. His wisdom & intelligence was respected by his peers at the Calgary Real Estate Board. God will be good to this man!!!!
My memories of Dad are mostly pre 1972.Vivid flashes from the Beausejour years, when Stan owned and multi-tasked the local paper. He was also the photographer.I remember his delight to demonstrate,in the Gertrude Street family home,a new kind of camera that could develope its own photo. Then change happened. The Winnipeg years.Idylism became pragmatic reality.Dad did local paper, sales with Pitney-Bowes;this is where Stan discovered something;and then working in real estate sales. Here was the perfect combination of strong work ethic, people dynamics, and personal freedom from a rigid schedule to equal Stan power. I have a loss.I have tears.
Aw gee. I am blessed to have known Stan....Stan and Cindy were neighbours of Tom and I at Hull Estates for many years. We were able to call each other by name which seemed rare in the building, at least from our perspective. I had occasion to solicit advice from Stan re: real estate on a couple of occasions and he gave freely of his experience and wisdom. After Tom passed and I moved away, I next met Stan at Sage Hill while visiting my friends. He had certainly entered his Dwindling. Aw gee. My sincere condolences to Cindy and Deb and to Stan's kids and their families.
So sad to hear of Stan's passing. My thoughts are with his family at this time. I remember Stan well in the Real Estate Community, particularly in the Calgary Chapter of the Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC). He was always cheerful, with his trademark chuckle! We have lost a dear friend in the community of real estate.
Kim, great sadness this morning when I read of your father’s passing. Stan was always great to deal with; helpful, knowledgeable and with a pleasant, gentlemanly manner - not always found so much these days. It was my pleasure to know Stan. Cheryl and I hope you and Bob and Lee are all safe and well. Dave
Here's a message from another retiree, vintage a little younger than Stan. I haven't seen Stan for years. Every time I saw him he had a smile and a clever comment to make on whatever was happening in the world or our business world. He had a little laugh when he talked, and he was hilarious. I always walked away from our conversations feeling elevated. Sorry world, Stan is gone.
I send love and condolences to my daughters Kim and Bob, Vanessa and Terry, and grandson, Lee on the lose of their father. Stan and very full and productive life and he is now at peace. Evelyn Turner
Auntie Evelyn, Brian, Kim and Vanessa, i am so sorry to hear the loss of your Dad. I have never forgotten Uncle Stan, I thought if him often. My deepest condolences to you and your families. Love from Auntie Pat and Heather
Myself and my brother may not be mentioned in this obituary, but we are also his beloved grandchildren. My earliest memory of Grandpa Stan was Christmas 1987. I was 4 and all I wanted from Santa was a penguin, and while I didn't receive a live bird, I was gifted a soft, plushy teddy penguin that I still have to this day. I remember meeting my cousin Lee, who was just a tiny baby, and thinking it was really special that our birthdays were so close (just a day apart in February). I visited again a few years later and visited the West Edmonton Mall, which was exciting, but shoveling the snow on my grandpas walkway and making him proud left a bigger impression on me, than the mall's wave pool ever could. Grandpa Stan was a realtor and he gave me this silly keychain from his firm that was a cartoon rendition of him and I carried it with me for years, until it was eventually lost. Thanks to Grandpa Stan and his partner, I have the entire collection of Peter Rabbit books, with one book in the series being sent each Christmas during my childhood. I have been looking for my estranged family members for a very long time. I am sad that my search resulted in discovering the passing of my grandpa Stan. I would be grateful to hear from and connect with my aunties Vanessa and Kim, as well as my only known cousin Lee. I can be reached by email at naomi.arnaut@gmail.com My deepest condolences go out to my kind, loving, and gentle father, who I love unconditionally, during this time of grief.
