Holger Bang
October 13th, 2021
Holger Bang, 79, of Okotoks, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 after spending a wonderful evening with his wife and friends.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark to Carl & Greta Bang on May 4, 1942, Holger lived a full life dedicated to serving his family, community and God.
Holger was predeceased by his parents Carl and Greta Bang (nee Jensen) and brother, Johnny. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Margit Bang of Okotoks (nee Larsen), 2 children, Dana (Janet) Bang of Calgary, Lana (Paul) Klassen of Sylvan Lake and 3 grandchildren, Erika and Soren Bang and Lucas Klassen. He is also survived by his brother Mogens (Anni) Bang and niece, Tina Bang of Denmark.
After completing school in Denmark, Holger became a journeyman machinist welder. He then went on to fulfill his required military service in the Danish Army and attained the rank of sergeant, specializing in physical training and marksmanship. Following his military service, he began studies at Tecnukum in Copenhagen in mechanical and production engineering.
From the age of 10, Holger took ballroom dance lessons and was the Danish National champion four times. He travelled throughout Europe competing successfully in ballroom and Latin American dance competitions. Holger had a lifelong love of sports, playing soccer and European handball that led him to coach and referee soccer throughout most of his adult life. He was also an avid fan of the Danish National Soccer Team, following their successes proudly.
After 3 years of university, he came to Canada to visit a childhood friend at Christmas in 1969. He loved Canada immediately and sought to immigrate and later became a Canadian citizen.
Holger met Margit in May 1970 and they were married on December 31, 1971 in Calgary. Holger worked in a variety of professions including sales, advertising, management and became a hydronic heating specialist for over 30 years, continuing to contract jobs into his retirement.
Holger enjoyed art (drawing and painting) following in his father’s footsteps. He took great pleasure watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, spending joyful hours babysitting and loved to share his joy of reading and telling stories to his children and grandchildren.
Holger was an active member of Bridges Church, serving in men’s fellowship and the financial committee. He was a consistent example of faithfulness in his commitment to worship. Holger’s faith was integrated in his daily life and he never missed an opportunity to pour Godly values into his relationships, especially with his children and grandchildren.
Holger will be forever loved & forever in our hearts. There will be a private interment in Okotoks followed by a memorial service at 2:00pm on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Bridges Church in Calgary by invitation only, due to Covid restrictions. There will be a livestream of the Memorial Service for those that are unable to attend in person. LINK: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85790747654

RIP mr bang
It was great having Holger in our church from the time my family and I arrived to Calgary from the West Coast for my dad to pastor until October of this year (1987 - 2021). Although Holger liked many things that aren't common for Canadians to, he was a friendly and respectful man. When my parents came home from celebrating his and Margit's 25th Anniversary on the first day of January in 1997, my mom mentioned that at the restaurant they and two other couples from my church ate at, Holger ordered a danish dish called steak tare tare (a raw steak with a raw egg on top). Until my time comes to leave this earth, I'll never forget that on a Father's Day a few years after that New Year's Day, Holger's name was called to win a steak at my church and my mom teased him saying he "had to cook that steak" since he ordered steak tare tare in front of three couples who weren't familiar with it. Although Holger will be missed by many friends, I find it great to know that he's now in the presence of Jesus and that all who've made Him their LORD and Saviour on this planet will see him again but in a place without sorrow, sickness, sin and pain.
Auntie Margit, Dana and Lana and families. So sorry to hear about Uncle Holger’s passing. Praying for comfort, strength and peace as you mourn. Grateful for the hope we have in our salvation in Jesus Christ and life eternally. Keeping you in our prayers! Love Shelley and Jody
Dana, Janet, Erika and Soren; So sorry to hear of the loss of your farfar, thinking of you:)
Well dressed and polished, he was a handsome man who arrived at any occasion with style. I loved how warm and gentle he spoke. I’d call as a teen, to speak with Lana, and Holger and Margit always asked how I was and brought me into their circle. He touched many lives, and my heart breaks for his family who are left to grieve.
Margit, Dana, Janet, Erika, Soren, Lana, Paul, and Lucas - what a beautiful tribute to Holger's life and his faith in Jesus. He will be missed by many. It is comforting to know he is now with Jesus and that one day we will all meet again in heaven. God bless you and give you peace as you walk through this sad time in your life. Doris & Nevin Henn

Hi Margit! Today, for no known reason, I thought about you and Holgar. On a whim, I typed Holgar's name on google and found he had passed away last October! I am very sorry for you and trust you are experiencing God's comfort and presence with you as you adjust to life without Holgar! We are now living in Calgary, after moving here in 2016. Blessings to you and your family!
