HAYES, Albert (Toad)
Our loving grandfather, father and brother passed away peacefully in Calgary on Sunday, July 3, 2022 at the age of 92. He was born in Fir Mountain, Saskatchewan, in 1930 and we think he was a Roughrider fan from day one. Toad was one of 10 children and grew up in a loving, busy household in Regina. In 1948, at the age of 18 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces where he and the family enjoyed a number of different postings around Western Canada. He also had posting in Germany and to Egypt as part of the Suez Canal Peace keeping force. When he retired from the Army in 1993 he started his second career working for the British forces stationed at Suffield Alberta. He enjoyed working for them for 19 years. When he finally retired he lived in Medicine Hat until his move to Airdrie in 2006 to be close to family. During his time he developed new friendships, especially his special friends Brian and Wanda. He spent eight years living at the Hamlets of Cedarwood Station in Airdrie where he quickly established himself as the facility ambassador and welcomer. We like to thank Lena,Heather,Leah,Chris and all the Cedarwood Team for all their kindness. We would like to thank TJ and the 49th Ward Team, the 51st Ward Team, Transitional Nurses Cheryl and Hazel at the Peter Laugheed Hospital. We would like to extend a big thank you to Dr Dhaliwal, Shayne at Carewest RX and the entire team at 3rd Floor, Cambridge Manor. Their care and compassion they provided was amazing! He is loving remembered by daughter, Sherry (Reg) Hihn and their daughter, Nicole (Steve Ryder); and his son, Gord (Kim) Hayes and their children, Easton (Maddie) and Krystal (Emmon); numerous nieces and nephews as well as his surviving siblings, Shirley and Glady. The family will be having a private Celebration later in the year. To Celebrate his Life the Hihn Family in conjunction with the Airdrie and District Community Foundation has established the Albert (Toad) Hayes fund to support Seniors and End of Life Care. I am so sorry to hear of Toads passing. All of the residents who moved to the new facility and I were talking about him last Saturday and wondering where he was. We thought he would be telling all his stories. When it was the battle of Alberta a month or so ago I thought Toad would be glued to the tv. Toad I will miss all our conversations at the breakfast table and your conversations with Tyra and Karen. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Linda,Tyra and Karen
Sherry - I was so sorry to hear of Uncle Toad's passing. I'm glad that we were able to spend some time with him and you folks when we were in Edmonton. He will be greatly missed.
Sherry, Gord and Families. I’m so sorry to hear of Uncle Toads passing. He will always be remembered for his big voice and the heart to go with it. His knowledge of every sport was amazing. He is probably telling stories as we speak to anyone that will listen. Thinking of you and your families.
Condolences from our family to yours. Uncle Toad will be missed, I always enjoyed discussing sports with him. He played a lot of sports and enjoyed watching them. I will always remember a couple of road trips we went on. One to Regina, in his car, with stops in a restaurant in Medicine Hat, where he knew everyone at the the restaurant including the wait staff and customers. Another road trip was to Kelowna, Just before Covid hit. He enjoyed telling Glenna and I stories from his army days in Germany. Best wishes to all. From our family to yours.
Sherry/Reg: So sorry to hear about Toad's passing. It was always so informative to listen to Toad's experiences, especially with the Armed Forces, both at home & the peacekeeping services overseas. He will be sorely missed! May He Rest In Eternal Peace!
I am so grateful that I was able to help, and hang out with Toad sine he moed to Airdrie. We had a lot of great talks and he was so good to my family. We will miss his huge personality.
Toad was a bright bulb! His joy for living and sense of humour brightened everyone around him. His light will be missed. We were lucky to know him. Hugs Susanne & Bar
