LEWIS, Alan George
June 28, 1933 - April 2, 2022
Alan Lewis of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the age of 88 years. After several weeks of declining health, Alan died with his beloved wife, Val and family by his side.
Alan was born in Swansea, South Wales, UK, to father William Lewis and mother Clara Lewis; the youngest of eighteen children, Alan left school at the tender age of 15 years and then commenced his college education at Swansea Technical College.
Alan was conscripted into the Army (Royal Engineers) at 21 years of age and was posted to Hong Kong at the rank of Corporal; he was honourably discharged 2 years later. He met his wife, Val, at a New Year’s Eve dance in 1958 and they married the following July in 1959. His work ethic and desire to take care of his family led him and Val, along with their daughters Caryn and Jayne, to a better life in Canada in March, 1967.
Alan and Val settled in the Willow Park area where they made their home for 45 years; Alan always said “nothing bad ever happens in Willow Park”. They treasured their time there and the many friendships they made.
Alan spent a majority of his working life at Bennett Millwork as an estimator before retiring to start his own business. In his spare time, he enjoyed his volunteering at the Tuxedo Credit Union as a board member and was then elected to President in 1983. Alan enjoyed his Friday evenings at the Calgary Legion (in Kensington) dancing the night away with Val and friends. He never left the house without a tie saying “you never know who you may run into!”
Alan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Val; his daughter, Jayne (Duane) of Calgary; son-in-law, Ed Zimmerman of Edmonton; grandchildren, Ashley Zimmerman of Calgary and Nikolaus Zimmerman (Laura) of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Caryn in 2017. Maybe you get to wear flip-flops in heaven. The grandchildren and ‘our dogs’ - Norman and Floyd - will miss their Bampi greatly.
A thank you to the staff of Auburn Heights Retirement Residence and a special thank you to the staff of McKenzie Towne Long-Term Care Home for their dedication and support. Alan wasn’t there for long but made a huge impression on the staff. At the request of the family no Service will be held. If desired, memorial donations in Alan’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary, #800, 7015 Macleod Trail SW, Calgary, Alberta T2H 2K6 or by telephone at (403) 290-0110.
