PORTEOUS, Gordon Ian
Gordon Ian Porteous was born on June 2, 1949 to Berenice and Hume Porteous in Calgary, AB. He shared his childhood with siblings Duncan, Scott and Jean on the family farm near Madden, AB. Gordon raised 3 children Cindy, Garth and Roxanne alongside their mother Dawn in Seven Persons and Camrose. Gordon’s passion for agriculture and politics started at a young age where he was an active member of 4-H and Premier of Tuxis Parliament. He then farmed for many years and raised purebred Herefords in southern Alberta.
Gordon loved being involved in fairs and exhibitions; where he excelled at taking a small town fair and turning them into innovative services and agriculture programs for the community.
He was the General Manager of the Camrose Regional Exhibition for 10 years where he was part of many boards such as Canadian Bull Congress, AAAS Director/President and CAFE director. His dedicated efforts were recognized with the prestigious merit award in 1999 from AAAS. His children often joked that all vacations involved a bull sale or a tour of fair grounds.
Gordon was quoted saying “Ag societies can be the melting point of a community because they extend beyond the municipal, religious and cultural differences”. These ideals lead him to return to school where he received a diploma in Asia Pacific Management in 2002 and travelled to China for agriculture consulting.
He loved China and returned many times where he studied to become an ESL instructor. Later he moved to Strathmore where he taught with Global and Fleet Safety. After retirement Gordon and his partner Dio opened their own cleaning business.
Gordon took pride in helping others and will be missed by many.
Gordon is loving remembered by partner, Dio; children, Cindy (Greg) Timinski and their children, Rheanna, and Jayna; Garth (Karla) Porteous and their children, Kiara, Landon, Kale (in Heaven), and Makaya; Roxanne (Gavin) Wakefield and their children, Shayla, Kaden, and Kaci; and mother of their children, Dawn; brothers Duncan Porteous and Scott (Janet) Porteous, and sister, Jean (Norm) Wong; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded by his mother and father.
