SOMMERFELD, Ann Janet

Ann Janet Sommerfeld, nee Douglas passed away August 17, 2022. Ann was born in Dundee Scotland February 10, 1947 and her family immigrated to Red Deer in 1960. Moving to Canada and the challenges that it created brought a close-knit family even closer together, as they adapted to their new lives as Canadians.
Ed met Ann in February 1969 and after a whirlwind romance, they were engaged in April and they were married on July 26, 1969 in Red Deer.
In 1975 Ann was able to take the time away from her accounting career to be a stay at home mother raising their two children Andrew and Jenn. Ann focused on family and the home, creating a loving and nurturing environment for the kids to grow and learn, and being a good neighbour and friend to many. After a time, Ann returned to accounting and enjoyed the community of her co-workers with many becoming her long time friends.
Ann was an extremely avid reader, with a significant collection of books many of which focused on alternative universes and science fiction. Playing games were always a treat for Ann and she relished the opportunity to beat someone in a spirited game of Scrabble or more recently Mah-jong. She loved physical activity, canoeing when she was younger, hiking and walking throughout her life, and the pool exercise group recently became a high point each week.
With visual challenges in later years Ann loved the freedom her electric bike gave her and could be seen zooming around town, to the library, the pool or grocery store.
Her true love and focus was family; Ed, the kids and the grandkids. Travelling to see Andrew in Chicago or Vancouver, or heading up to Stoney Plain to see Jenn and Dave and the grandkids were always much anticipated and relished events. She also enjoyed the multiple opportunities to go back to the UK to visit family there.
Survived by her loving husband, Ed; her children, Andrew and Jenn; her son-in-law, Dave; and her grandchildren, David, Callie, Will and Aleda. Also survived by sister, Sandra McNeil; her brother, Iain, their partners and their children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by her parents, William (Bill) and Jean Douglas; and her brothers, Phil and Bill Douglas.
Ed and the family would like the extend their thanks for the remarkable care received by doctors and nurses at the Lougheed and Foothills hospitals, Airdrie EMS Service, Airdrie Home Care, and the compassionate care given by the team at the Dulcina Hospice Centre.
Ann will always be remembered and cherished with love.

Ann was always a very caring and supportive friend. I considered her one of my closest friends . I treasured her friendship and will miss her very much. All our love and deepest sympathy from Lesley, Bob, Ian, Kerry and family
I met Ann about 10 years ago at Deep Water Running classes. We became fast friends. She was always smiling and very up-beat. Later we both started playing Mahjong which she enjoyed immensely. Will very much miss our chats, both of us reminiscing about our childhood and Countries of birth. Rest in Peace now my friend until we meet again.
