Phyllis Irene Sorensen

April 20th, 2012

Held in the love of her family, Phyllis died peacefully following a stroke at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina on April 20, 2012.  Predeceased by her husband Leonard and grandson Kris, Phyllis is survived by her beloved seven children and their partners Warren (Greg), Karen (Alan), Linda Kay, Sandra, Tom (Dawn), Norma, and Sue (Michael). Phyllis will be a loving touchstone always to her 17 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren, and a beloved Aunt to many.  Phyllis was born in Duval on July 5, 1916 to Grace and Tom Henderson, homesteaders in the Last Mountain District, the eldest of three daughters. The strength of character, kindness, and compassion that Phyllis carried throughout her life were inherited from a long line of fine women and loving men.  Phyllis attended Regina College and became a teacher in rural prairie schools until she married Leonard in 1940. Dedicated to parenting, Phyllis was an outstanding mother - providing guidance to her 7 children to do their best and was the first to applaud each and every achievement.  With her family at her centre, Phyllis pursued her own spiritual, intellectual, and cultural development. She was a woman of quiet, deep faith. She loved books and music. She enjoyed travelling and spending time with family and friends. She appreciated the services of the CBC, the Extension programmes of the University of Regina, and later in life - of the CNIB and Regina Public Library Outreach to keep her informed and engaged in community and world affairs.  Phyllis was a generous, accepting person. She was proud of and celebrated the diversity and variety of interests and talents of her family. Her lifelong friends were so loved and important to her.  Phyllis, like her mother Grace, was a strong, loving role model who will be loved and celebrated forever.  A service to honour Phyllis will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Wesley United Church, 3913 Hillsdale Street, Regina, SK.  Donations to honour Phyllis can be made to Mobile Crisis Services Inc., 1646 11th Avenue, Regina, SK., S4P 0H4.

Messages:

We were so happy to have met Phyllis on several occasions when she visited Toronto. What a kind, wise, and caring individual she was. Although there is now a terrible void for the family, we know they will always keep beautiful and consoling memories of her in their hearts. We remember dear Phyllis in our prayers. Heinrich & Terry

Linda Kay...I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Although I did not know your mother personally, I do recall readily how you spoke of her so fondly and how your deep love for her was so evident. Sending you a hug and letting you know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was so sad to hear of Phyllis' passing. My condolences to all the family. I was always in awe of her, how she could accomplish so much in a day and make it look like no effort. I have fond memories of shared meals at the family supper table. She was also a geat cook! Cheryl Seaman

Sandra, Norma and family So sorry for your loss

So sorry about your lose. I had always thought of Phyllis as a strong woman, in many ways. Will be missed by so many. Please know, you all are in my thought and prayers.

Norma and family: I was saddened to hear of your mother's death. I know that she lived a full and interesting life, and pray that you will all find joy in your memories of your mom.

We are neighbours and friends of Todd and Darlene Sorensen. We met Phyllis a few years ago at a family gathering and had the pleasure of joining Phyllis, Tom, Dawn, Darlene and Todd for dinner in Palm Springs last winter. We also celebrated her 95th birthday with her!!! She so enjoyed every occasion!!! We join with you in celebrating a life well lived.

We were saddened to learn of Phyllis' death. Although we had not seen her in a while & missed her presence at Wesley, we remember when she attended and participated regularly. We have no doubt you will all miss her & grieve the loss of her presence among you. She lived well & long - we will celebrate that & share in your grief on Tuesday.

We are sending our thoughts and prayers to all of the Sorensen family in the passing of such a wonderful lady. I have so many wonderful memories of Mrs. Sorensen.
