Shirley Jean Knight

June 20th, 2013

After a brief illness with cancer Shirley passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the age of 87 years.  She is survived by her three daughters Judy (Cathryn) Helfrick, Gail (Gary) Orthner, and Bonnie (John) Ottenbreit; three step-daughters Valerie (Harvey) Gerein, Trudy (Ron) Hitchcock, and Sheri (Greg) Selinger; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters Doreen Hudson and Barbara (Jack) Webb; sisters-in-law Thelma Alexander, Lois (Greg) Crumbly, Ruby Knight, and Rita Arnott; brothers-in-law Steve Schaumleffel and Bill Knight.   Shirley was predeceased by her parents Ralph and Hilda Harrison; two husbands Adam Schaumleffel and Brad Knight; step-daughter Michelle Waterfield and a great grandson.  Shirley worked as a secretary in a number of public schools, starting after the youngest daughter was in school.  She continued at Wascana School for twenty-six years seeing her own children and two of her grandchildren attend.  She retired at the age of 65 years.  Shirley spent most of her summers at Regina Beach enjoying the sun, swimming, and golfing.  She was a charter member of the Beta Sigma Phi.  This year she received her 65 year pin!  She has forged a lot of very good friendships along the way.  One of her favorite vacation spots was Las Vegas where she traveled several times with her husbands and her sister.  She also enjoyed many trips to Arizona during the last few years.  In 2007 she traveled to Maui with her three daughters.  It was a trip full of lifetime memories for all.  She was a “one of a kind” lady, loved by all.  She will be missed and always in our hearts.  Private Graveside Service will be held.  A Celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Good Samaritan R. C. Church, 425 Broad St. N., Regina, SK.  Flowers most gratefully declined.  Friends so wishing may make donations, in Shirley’s memory, to the Regina Palliative Care Inc., 4F – 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK S4T 1A5.

Messages:

To begin, I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to all of Shirley's family. Shirley was the first school secretary I ever worked with as I started my teaching career at Wascana School and was I ever lucky to have her! She welcomed me and took me under her wing in many ways. Her laughter was infectious and that was sure needed on some days! I am sorry that I was unable to attend the celebration service as it was my daughter's graduation - do know that I have kept all of you in my thoughts and prayers this week and will always have a special place for Shirley in my heart. Sincerely, Karen Howard
