Douglas Mervin Durant

February 20th, 2018

Douglas Mervin Durant passed away peacefully at the Wolf Willow Health Centre in Eastend, Sask. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. He was 78 years old.

Doug will be forever loved by his wife of 57 years, Betty. His legacy will live on in his five children Perry (Lorie) Durant, Sherree (Rolf) Zeis, Sharleen (Doug) Ulrich, Ryan (Chanton) Durant, and Jason (Nadine) Durant, as well as his 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Doug will also be fondly remembered by his sister Betty (Dennis) Romaniuk, brother Jim (Joan) Durant, sister-in-law Donna Durant, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Doug was predeceased by his parents Earl and Evelyn Durant, and his brother Earl Jr. Durant.

Doug was born May 12, 1939 in Quill Lake, Sask. He grew up on the family farm and following graduation, went on to complete his degree in Education at the University of Saskatchewan. Doug held teaching positions in Blaine Lake and Regina, Sask. before moving with his wife and five children to become Principal at Eastend School. He remained in this role until his retirement in 1990.

Doug loved golfing, reading, music, socializing and teaching – which was so much more than a profession to him. He took every opportunity to be a lifelong learner and to share his knowledge with others. Above all, Doug’s greatest love was his family. Doug’s honesty, kindness and patience will live on in our hearts forever.

A Celebration of Doug’s Life will take place on Monday, February 26, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the Eastend United Church, Eastend, Sask. A reception will follow at the Eastend Memorial Hall.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Anne Davis and the staff at Wolf Willow Health Centre for their excellent care of their Dad, and the ongoing care of their Mom. And, thank you to the community of Eastend for their love and support.

Memorial donations in memory of Doug can be made to the ALS Society of Saskatchewan.

Messages:

I remember my mom being so happy that we finally got a principal with 5 kids. She figured he would understand us better, and he did. When Mr D got mad it wasn’t fear I felt, just remorse at having upset him. He cared about all of us, and no one more than his big loving family. My very sincere condolences go out to all of you; his wonderful wife, children, their children and their children’s children. He was a great man and will be greatly missed.

I remember Uncle Doug and a smile comes to my face. His warm smile always cheered me up. I will be doing that on Monday, remembering Uncle Doug and thinking about his great family.

It was such a pleasure to know Doug, he was welcoming, kind and engaging. We always appreciated that he made time to stop and visit. We'll always cherish the Durant memories. Our thoughts are with you. Gregg & MaryAnne
