Rose Gwilliam
October 12th, 2021
Born Florentine Rosalie Lengert on January 31, 1926 to Berthold and Wilhelmina Lengert in Lang, Saskatchewan. Rose, as she is affectionately known, was the 9th of 10 children.
On May 5, 1950 Rose married Donald Lockhart Gwilliam and they built a beautiful life together. Visitors were always welcome and their house was more often than not filled with the sounds of laughter (sometimes groans after hearing Rose's horrible jokes), old-time music being played on a piano, organ, harmonica, spoons, fiddle, violin, or numerous other instruments visitors would bring along with them (this group was affectionately referred to as the 'Dons and Roses'), and tall tales (always told by Rose, corrected by Don, then overruled again by Rose). There was always pie and ice cream available, the candy dish was always full and no one ever left their house hungry. Don and Rose were blessed with four sons Doug, Dennis, Daryl and Duane (Janice); six grandchildren Janie, Jeff, Jodi, Jackie, Justin and Cassandra; and nine great-grandchildren Daphne, Tayson, Maxwell, Karver, Oliver, Paisley, Emme, Presley and Kaleigha.
Family was very important to Don and Rose. They were proud of their boys and were always happy to have their grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit. The couple also enjoyed traveling to music festivals where Rose was often heard accompanying a fiddle player on the piano or organ, lazy Sunday (or weekday) drives touring the countryside, summer trips to The Milky Way, feeding the birds in Wascana Park, bowling, weekly trips to the hair salon and entertaining in care homes and various community events with the Heritage Fiddlers and Old Time Music Makers. Rose also kept busy sewing, having learnt to sew, knit and crochet from her mother and sisters. She used the skills she gained growing up and taught sewing at Stretch "n" Sew, followed by her own home-based sewing business.
On June 15, 2005 after 55 years of marriage Don passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Rose managed to keep herself busy with friends, family and a variety of activities including frequent lunch dates with her family, games, music festivals and shopping - oh! how she loved to shop! In her early 80s she got her first cell phone, computer and created a Facebook account to keep up with everyone. As time passed, Rose slowed down but her love for her family, jokes, a homemade meal, bingo and binge-watching curling and baseball never waned.
On October 12, 2021 Rose passed away peacefully in her sleep. Her family is grateful for the time they had with her, blessed for the beautiful memories she (and Don) left them with, blessed for the skills and stories shared and comforted in the knowledge that Rose and Don are together again. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Rose was predeceased by her parents and eight siblings; her husband Don; sisters-in-law Adele, Ruth and Greta; daughter-in-law Maureen; and granddaughter Jodi. She is survived by her brother Walter (Mary) Lengert; sister-in-law Marilyn (Gord) Brow; her children Doug, Denis, Daryl and Duane (Janice); five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Rose and Don will be buried together at a Private Family Service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association (https://www.diabetes.ca). The family would like to thank the staff at the Regina Lutheran Home for the kindness shown to Rose and all the care they provided her in the last years of her life.

Rose, Mary Bagan and I played many games of Skip-bo when Rose and I lived at Norwest Place Housing Co-op on Engel Drive. We were such good friends. Very sorry for the loss of your mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
