Jim Jobse
June 4th, 2021
Jim Jobse passed away peacefully on the morning of June 4, 2021 at Pioneer Village in Regina, Saskatchewan in the loving and respectful hands of his nurses. He was 73.
Jim was born in the small town of Wormerveer, Holland on March 18, 1948. He was the “baby” of the family as his next oldest sibling was 7 years older! Jim grew up in an athletic family showing great promise in the Dutch “religious traditions” of gymnastics and football. Despite his small stature he was extremely strong and was known to be able to perform impressive feats of strength like the Iron Cross and handstand pushups even into his 30’s and 40’s. Aside from athletic prowess, Jim showed his responsible and mature side early in life as he took care of his Mother after the passing of his Father. The duo eventually decided to leave their homeland for the promise and adventure of life in Canada.
It was in Canada that he met his partner in life, Elizabeth. She was the proverbial daughter of a Preacher man, the 3rd oldest child of a large, charismatic and loud Guyanese family. Jim was captivated by Elizabeth with her beauty and unassuming charm. She could not resist the handsome Dutchman with his laid-back debonair James Dean-esque charm. They fell in love and married soon after, the beginning of a 50-year journey together navigating a land that was not native to either. Jim began a career as an Elevator Mechanic, a job he performed at a supremely high level. Industry insiders regarded Jim as a skilled technician who possessed razor sharp analytical skill and a knack for finding answers when nobody could. He continued to exhibit this skill for many years even as technology profoundly changed the industry. He was sought after by numerous companies who knew what Jim Jobse “brought to the table”. Elizabeth supported her hard-working husband at home raising their 2 children and fostering a home environment that represented the couple’s strong Christian faith. Jim’s career took a meandering path which took them across the country several times, but they were grounded by their love for each other and their fledgling family.
Aside from proficiency in his profession, Jim found solace in his basement workshop, a place where innumerable projects came to life. He could often be found bent over his newest project in deep thought with the sounds of Placido Domingo or Mahalia Jackson crooning in the background. He was a creative genius sculpting wood into pieces of art, furniture, educational tools and other treasures many of which have stood the test of time. Jim was an artisan who was painstakingly precise and poured so much of himself into each piece.
Everything Jim did in life was for his family. He was the consummate family man who clothed himself humbly so that his wife and children had everything they needed. His work ethic was legendary and provided a warm, comfortable home for decades. He was a patient father who taught his children with a gentle and loving hand. He was a traditional and conservative gentleman and made no apologies for that. He showed the world that a strong foundation of faith, traditional values, respect for people and humility were still relevant and significant. He was good, kind, humble and a servant and he will be so greatly missed.
Jim battled a relentless and savage disease called Alzheimers. His courage and strength were matched only by his wife’s grace and service to him as they fought side by side. He has now found his peace.
Jim is survived by his wife Elizabeth with whom he journeyed for nearly 50 years as well his two sons Jason (Jody) (grandchildren Noah, Jacob, Samara) and Courtney (Catherine). He was predeceased by his son Geoffrey Francis. Jim leaves behind his brothers John in Vancouver, and Joe in Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan in Jim’s name.
A Memorial Service for Jim will be held in Regina Apostolic Church, 808 Assiniboine Avenue East, Regina, SK at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Sending condolences and love to all the family, and so thankful for all the memories of Jim over the years. Like when he designed and built a “doggy elevator” in the basement for the dog so it could be lifted up to the window and access the doggy door to the backyard! As a kid - and even still as an adult - I am so impressed! It just goes to show how smart and clever Jim was, but also how caring and considerate. Blessings and comfort to you all.

Liz, although we have only been friends and neighbours for a year and I was never afforded the pleasure of meeting Jim, the love of your life! I feel as if I know him from how you talk about him in such loving ways about how special he treated you, what a great father he was and about all the long lasting friendships you made with others, as a couple over the years. It was an honor to be his friend. Jim had an incredible sense of humor. A love of family, a dedication to doing the right thing. Whenever I think of Jim I see him first and foremost as a husband, then a father then a friend. He will be missed.
