Joseph Newby

June 9th, 2021

Joseph Walter Newby passed away peacefully on June 9, 2021 at the age of 86.

He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary Newby; his loving wife Olga; his sisters Josephine Campbell, Minnie Clayton, Beverly Newby and Marilyn Knecht. Joe is survived by his sons Richard Newby and Robert (Tracey) Newby; granddaughter who he shared a special bond with Tiffany (Nolan) Newby; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; his best friend Marietta; and all his friends of Sarnia Beach, SK.

Joe worked for CN Rail for 37 years. He always had a passion for locomotives since he was a young child and that carried into his adult years. In the 70’s, Joe and his wife Olga and their twins built a cabin from the ground up and that’s where Joe spent most of his life after retirement. He loved being on the boat, watching the birds and keeping busy with yardwork. He was a handyman and had the ability to always use old parts to rig up something new to make it work again. He loved to stay busy and productive. Joe had a contagious smile and laugh that could brighten anyone’s day.

A very special thank you to Joe’s caregivers and all the staff at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre of Unit 3-5, Regina, SK who became family, as well as the staff of Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, Regina, SK where he spent his last few weeks.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions the family has decided a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

If you so desire in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wascana Rehabilitation Centre Unit 3-5, c/o Hospitals of Regina Foundation (www.hrf.sk.ca).

Messages:

Rob and Rick Oh so sad to see that your Dad Joe passed away. We had so many wonderful years in Saskatoon and the few times we visited them in Regina and at the lake, also the times Mom and Dad came to our lake at Emma. We had tried a few times to get ahold of him but was unsuccessful. Rick and Rob you now have our e mail so please contact us in Saskatoon. We no longer live on Moore Place. Please let us know how you both are doing if you see this.

Richard and Robert, I am sorry to hear of the passing of your father. Joe was my foreman when I worked on the CNR in 1976 and 1977. He told a lot of stories about his experiences. When he was starting out, he was on the Transcona auxiliary and was dispatched to clean up the Dugald head on wreck. He also told a lot of stories of working on steam locomotives, especially 6200s. He didn't like Alco locomotives (They're gutless, can't pull themselves around a curve with a traction motor cut out!). I also remember how he once changed out 2 injectors on the the lead unit of the Supercontinental in less than 15 minutes, allowing it to leave on time. Joe, rest in peace and my light eternal shine upon you.

Condolences and sympathies to all of the family. Was always great to share stories with Joe when he’d come visit Olga at work. Rest In Peace Joe

Extraordinary man huge heart on his sleeve made anyone's day he ran into a day to appreciate no matter the circumstances...his smile & laugh literally changed the people he met no doubt in my mind God & Jesus put out another chair for him
