Doris Irene Ohrt

January 19th, 2022

Doris Ohrt passed away peacefully in Wascana Rehabilitation Centre with her husband, Bob, by her side on January 19, 2022 in Regina, Saskatchewan at the age of 81.

Doris was born March 5, 1940 in Rosetown Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm near Anglia with her father Ledson, mother Grace, and siblings Shirley, Donald, Robert and Roy. She had many stories of her early life on the farm, from the hard work they shared in garden, barnyard and fields, shenanigans her brothers and sisters would get into (also get her into and vice versa), happy times wandering the fields and cooleys, looking in the creek, and a true walk up hill to school. It was during this time she developed a life-long love of all animals great and small.

When she completed high school, she moved to Saskatoon where she attended and successfully completed Robertson’s Secretarial School. She got a job at the University of Saskatchewan’s campus, as one of the secretaries in the 4-H Women’s Extension Program in Kirk Hall. It is while working at Kirk Hall that she met the love of her life, Bob, whose dorm room was directly above the secretaries’ offices. She said she would watch the ceiling light fixtures dance as the boys would stomp around and roughhouse upstairs. Bob was one of those guys, and had noticed the pretty strawberry blonde in the office below. He finally asked her out, to which the rest is history.

In 1962, they were the first couple married in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Regina, and this July would have been their 60th Anniversary. They lived in Regina for several years while she was a secretary for Sask Power Credit Union and then University of Regina Humanities Department, while Bob farmed. They then decided to move to the farm entirely, and focus both their attentions there. They were regular attending members of Pilgram Lutheran Church at Riceton, SK. They enjoyed camping in the Rockies when time allowed, and travelling, even attending the Montreal Expo in 1967. They welcomed their son Tracy to the world in 1971, and built a house on the yardsite in 1975. They continued to farm until 1989, after which she helped Bob once again as a secretary from home as he worked his own Milestone Appliance & Repair business.

While Doris had a passion for music and many arts and crafts over the years, from painting, rock collecting, ceramics, and papermaking, her love of eggery was what she was most known for. She crafted many different styles of eggs, from simple appliqué, painted and beaded, to delicately cut apart and reassembled works of art. Many people in the community received her creations, which are displayed to this day.

Unfortunately, in the 2010’s dementia had started to plague her memory, necessitating a move to Carrington Court in Milestone, then into Regina to dedicated facilities. A steady decline culminated with her getting pneumonia which took her.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, Ledson and Grace; sister and brother-in-law Shirley (Wally) Badowsky; and brother Donald.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of 59 years, Bob Ohrt of Milestone; son, Tracy Ohrt of Edmonton, AB; brother Robert (Delores) Lamarsh of Calgary, AB, brother Roy (Eileen) Lamarsh of Medicine Hat; sister-in-law, Carol Lamarsh of Anglia, SK; nieces, Nancy (Danny) Nagel of Swift Current, Barb (Don) Shepherd of Saskatoon, SK, Marnie (Barry) Delparte of Calgary, and Danielle McFetridge of Medicine Hat; nephews David Lamarsh of Anglia, SK, Leonard Lamarsh of Edmonton, AB, Cary Badowsky of Oakville, ON, Scott Lamarsh of Calgary, AB, and Ryley Lamarsh of Calgary, AB; cousins Moyra (Keith) Ohrt, John (Tanya) Ohrt and Allan (Rena) Ohrt of Milestone, SK; and numerous great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

A private family service will take place in the spring or summer.

The family would like to thank the fantastic nurses and excellent staff of Regina Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, for all their help, patience, kindness, and tender care of our wife and mother, Doris.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested any donations in Doris’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan (https://alzheimer.ca/sk/en/about-us/alzheimer-society-saskatchewan).

Messages:

Bob & Tracy: Our sincere condolences to both of you. May Doris rest in peace. We will keep you both in our thoughts and prayers. Our family has enjoyed two of Doris's craft talents over the years - we have a knitted blanket that was part of Bob and Doris's wedding gift to us. It has held up well for almost 25 years. We also have a Christmas tree ornament egg that is absolutely stunning - we enjoy it every year as it goes on our tree, and marvel at the care and attention that went into making it. Both pieces have become items that are treasured and enjoyed. She will be fondly remembered.

Tracy and Bob, we are so sorry to hear of Doris’s passing. Hold your memories close and know that our thoughts are with you. Gail, Trevor and Erin Quigley

Our prayers and thoughts are with you, your father and family. Marie and David
