Poon (Johnny) Wong
March 1st, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Poon - Johnny Wong on the morning of March 1st, 2022 after a brave 4 month battle with bladder cancer at the age of 78 years old. Johnny passed away peacefully with family members by his side. Johnny is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Pei Wah – Mary; children Debbie (Francis), Philip and Stacey (Kris); and numerous family members and friends.
Johnny was born in Toishan, China, the eldest son of 13 children. At the age of 12 he left home to seek work to provide for his family. He immigrated to Canada in 1969. He was back and forth between Saskatchewan and Alberta, spending his first years in Tompkins, SK, where he helped and contributed to the success of his family's restaurant business. He then spent a number of happy years in Calgary where he met his wife Mary and started his own family. He would venture back to Saskatchewan to help out in another family restaurant business in Cabri and then in Abbey. Eventually, an opportunity arose and gave them a chance to own their business. With his growing family, they moved and settled in Lafleche, SK, where they operated a restaurant, John's Cafe for 30 odd years. Johnny was a jack of trades who thrived on doing things his way. He had an incredibly generous spirit and a wonderful way of making those around him smile, laugh and have a good time. A lot of time, he would do this through his cooking and was well known for his Johnny Burger and Veal Cutlets. One of his favourite and many people’s sought-after events in Lafleche was his Chinese New Year’s feast. His time in Lafleche was well spent and he made many lifelong friends. He was extremely sharp and enjoyed playing cribbage and Chinese chess with his friends and family. Johnny had a strong sense of family responsibility and worked hard all his life to provide for his family, but always managed to find time to enjoy life. These traits and many more will continue to live through his grateful children.
The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Chun Huang and the entire Palliative Care team at the Regina Pasqua Hospital - their hard work and support during this difficult time will not be forgotten.
A private service will be held at a later date.
