Rosella Pearl Shmigelski
May 9th, 2023
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mom and grandma Rosella Shmigelski (nee Poncelet) on May 9 ,2022 of Cupar, SK at the age of 80. Rosella was born July 12, 1942, the youngest of three children born to Dominic and Cecilia Poncelet (nee Reding) of the Wolverine District near Carmel, SK. She grew up on the family farm with her two siblings until she moved to Humboldt to work at St Mary’s Villa in her twenties.
Rosella met her soul mate Michael Shmigelski in Humboldt while she was working at St Mary’s Villa, they were married on October 15, 1968, and they were blessed with two daughters, Michelle, and Sheryl. Rosella was a stay-at-home mom while their two girls were growing up, she had a green thumb and grew a large garden every year from which she canned and made the most fantastic meals as cooking and baking were one of her passions. Mom knitted and crocheted as well as creating hand made clothing and crafts of all sorts in her sewing room. She was an avid Blue Jays fan, watched hockey with Mike and loved to watch the Roughriders games on TV as well as horror movies. She loved talking about her days growing up on the farm and her adventures with her brother which usually meant one of them probably would have been in trouble or was going to get the other into some sort of a predicament, times spent with her sister doing chores and all sorts of silly things and riding her horses which, she missed greatly. She would always say when we went for a family drive that she would love to just get on a horse and ride to feel that freedom again. Family meant the world to her, and she was especially proud of the accomplishments of her girls and her granddaughter, always making sure time spent with her. A visit with grandma always meant getting spoiled with a lot of love, fantastic food, lots of laughter and of course her favorite dessert; ice cream. This would always mean a walk with grandma to the library then the 7-11 for a Slurpee or a drive to DQ for a sundae.
Rosella is survived by her daughter Michelle, her granddaughter Jessica Desfosses, her brother Len (Darlene) Poncelet, sister Irene (Arnold)Langenhoff, sister-in-law Olga Chuckrowski and brother-in-law Bill Smigelski, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews as well as those she considered her extended family.
Rosella was predeceased by her parents Dominic and Cecilia Poncelet, her grandson Jamie, daughter Sheryl and the love of her life Michael, brothers in law Dan Shmigelski and Steve Chuckrowski and nephew David Chuckrowski.
Funeral services will be held at a later date to take place in Humboldt, SK. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cupar and District Nursing Home, Box 310, Cupar, SK, S0G 0Y0, or Parkinson’s Canada. Jessica and I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the CCA’s, nurses and all the staff at Cupar Nursing Home for the love given to mom, the exceptional care she received, and the compassion shown to her in her years living there and in her final weeks and days. Mom enjoyed all the laughs she shared with all; her sense of humor will live on in our memories.
