Hubert Smith

November 24th, 2012

To our profound sorrow on Saturday, November 24, 2012 our patriarch, Bert Smith passed away peacefully in his sleep at Surrey, BC.

He played many roles throughout his long life, brother, husband, father, uncle, friend and touched the lives of many people. He spent his long career in the magazine industry. First with American News and eventually at Great Pacific News. He was an avid golfer and participated extensively in the life of his church. He served as a volunteer in a variety of organizations for many years; notably Meals on Wheels and Oak Ave Daycare. His humour, compassion and forthright manner will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret Smith (Spafford). He is survived by his wife Ruth Smith (nee Teschke), sons Mark (April), Peter and daughter Liz (Eric). Grandchildren:  Kurt, Johanna LInke, Garrett, Channing Bates, Will, Tori Strong, Trenda Schellenberg (Gilts), Kristen Gilts and great-grandchildren Brittany, Brad Schellenberg and Mackenzie Lovell.

Memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Northwood United Church 8855 156 St.  Donations may be made in memory of Bert to Northwood United Contingency Fund in lieu of flowers.

You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence for the family.

Messages:

I met Bert 34 years ago when my children went to Oak Avenue daycare. We were on "The Board" together. I was a parental rep and Bert was a Church rep. Bert was always calm, fair and a willing listener in all the years we volunteered together. He was the type of man who always saw the glass half full rather than half empty. His love of his partner and his family and his extended Church family was evident in all that he did. Bert didn't just "talk the walk", he "walked the walk". The world is a poorer place without him in it.

Ruth my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Bert will always be remembered as a fine human being who was cheerful kind and ready to share a joke. From you I have learned that he was a loving husband and father who shall be missed. To me he will always be remembered as a friend and golf pro who taught me how to drive (the ball that is). Some of my fondest memories were from our school golf tournaments where many of us had the good luck to be on Bert"s team. I am sure when Marian set the teams up she deliberately paired those of us who were challenged golfers with Bert. She knew that he would be patient, polite and would not lose it when we missed the ball. On one of tournaments I was on Bert's team. He coached me throughout. I am one of Bert's success stories for at that tournament I won the award for the longest "drive." I felt smug as I had beat Lloyd, Graham, Fred Hartman and some of the more competitive golfers! Thank you Bert. Whenever I go golfing you shall be in my thoughts! Our condolences Ruth and if you need anything remember we are just a phone call away!! Louie and Mira
