Christina Lamont Stewart
December 20th, 2017
Christina went to be with the Lord, leaving behind a family that adored her. She is survived by one sister Alice (Stan) Warnock of Penticton; five of her six children: Rosemary, Margaret Jane (George) Ney, Ken (Jane), David (Elizabeth) and Rob (Karen). She was predeceased by her husband Ray, and her youngest son, Bruce (Liz). She leaves behind twenty two grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren.
Christina was born in Peterhead Scotland, to James and Mary Alice Gowans. At the age of two, they, along with extended family, immigrated to Canada. She married John Ray Stewart in 1944, while he served with the Canadian Intelligence Corp in the war effort.
After the war, Chris and Ray settled in White Rock, where Ray resumed his teaching career. She and Ray were one of the founding families of the White Rock Evangelical Free Church. Christina began work from home as a columnist with the White Rock Sun and a variety of other newspapers. Later, as they moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, when Ray became a professor at the University of Lethbridge, she became a feature story writer with the Lethbridge Herald, writing a column named, "People of the South." She also became a realtor, attaining frequent recognition as top saleswoman in southern Alberta.
Upon Ray's retirement from University of Lethbridge, Ray and Chris built a cottage on Mayne Island, as a place for their growing family to gather in the summers for reunions.
Chris was the life and heart of the family home. Her passion was to live for others, and she was known for her great hospitality to all. Her godly example was played out daily through her kindness.
An extraordinary life lived for ninety-six years, she will be missed dearly by her family and by many who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held at North Delta Evangelical Free Church. 11300 84 Ave. Delta BC, at 1:00 PM, Friday, January 5. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peace Arch Hospice Society, 15435 – 16A Avenue South Surrey, BC V4A 1T2, or can be given online at: https://www.peacearchhospice.org.
Messages:
My condolences to Mrs. Stewart's family. Our families were friends years ago and attended the White Rock Evangelical Free Church. I have good memories of Chrissy and her family. Hugs and prayers for you all.
Such a host of witnesses to the life of Christina Stewart, mother of Rosemary. May she rest in the peace that God provides for his loving children forever.
Chris was a loving, giving person whose goal in life appeared to be a desire to serve God by helping others. In Lethbridge, as a Realtor, she helped many people get their first homes by helping them financially. When we returned to Lethbridge from a term as missionaries in Liberia she helped us buy our first home. Her love for the Lord was also demonstrated by hosting people in her home for meals, baby showers and overnight. Chris had a beautiful smile which warmed people's hearts and drew them to the Lord Jesus who she served. A genuine servant has gone home to be with her Saviour. What a testimony!
Mrs. Stewart was so kind to us when we had our first son in Lethbridge. So hospitable, and even sold our first house. She was very bright and caring of others. A wonderful example to her children. May her family sense the very real comfort of our Loving Father.
Our families go back a long way!! We came to White Rock in 1947. We lived on Martin St. across the road from the Stewart family. We went to the same church also as my uncle was the pastor. Our families were friends. I have so many memories of Chrissy. She was so hospitable and I would be invited to sleep over with Rosemary. I remember when we would get in her Austin, that she would always pray before she drove. She set a good example for us kids. Chrissy was also known for her match making and cared for us all! I am so sorry that we won't be able to come to the service tomorrow as we have another one at the same time and my husband is a Pallbearer. Our love and condolences to you all. Merl and Bev Francis.
I have such good memories of Chris, Ray and their family of six. “Chrissy” was a blessing to all as she loved the Lord and showed it by her warm smile and manner as she served others. Our family was the other Stewart family of six at the Evanglical Free Church. It has been good to reconnect with her and Rosemary since our move here. She will be missed but her legacy will continue here while she will be enjoying God’s presence up close. Prayers for you, the family, that you may rejoice with her as you all get together. Sharon
I have very fond memories of Mrs. Stewart and the entire Stewart family through our mutual involvement at the White Rock Evangelical Free church many, many decades ago. Her ability to be so very attentive to the individual comes to mind. I send my condolences and love to you all. Ruth (Hollingshurst) Norton
The above shows what a full Life she lived and enjoyed all her family so much as she loved to entertain. I enjoyed my visits with her at the home. All will miss her but now will look forward to seeing her in Heaven....our future venture. Blessing and strength to each of you at this time ...Sheila Robatzek
My sincere sympathy on the loss of your mother. I have many memories of her over the years starting with being Martin St neighbors. She was a very caring person, always willing to help others. She and my mom had a good longterm friendship. She always had something on the go and was very diverse in her aspirations. In many ways, she was ahead of her generation of women! Treasure the many wonderful memories you have of her and let them warm your hearts at this difficult time.
