Anna Folkerts
December 9th, 2018
Anna Folkerts, age 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Cascades Hospice in Chilliwack, BC.
Anna was born in the town of Tolbert, in the province of Groningen, The Netherlands in 1934, to Jan and Elizabeth Piers. Then at the early age of 3, with her parents and siblings, Hielkje and Klaas, they moved to the town of Doezum. A few years later, after World War 2 had ended, mom with her brother and parents left for Canada. The ship named `TABENTA’, took them safely to Montreal and then they travelled by train to Edmonton, Alberta. It was then only a short trip to the promised land, also known as Neerlandia, where they had extended family members living, waiting to greet them. We assume the cold winter of 1948 did not sit well with the family, so they moved to Ladner, BC in the Spring of 1949. Shortly after, mom took up the task of being the housekeeper for the family of Cliff Wright, while her parents and brother Klaas, began working in the dairy farming industry. Then in 1952 mom met Andy Folkerts and after a 2 year plus courtship, married on September 8, 1954. (We understand that our parents had their eyes on each other in The Netherlands already a few years earlier, but because of mom’s young age (13), it was kept somewhat quiet). Over the following 16 years, living in Richmond, 7 children were born to our parents, 6 sons and 1 daughter. Then in 1973, the family moved to Chilliwack. While our father’s career was painting, mom stayed home, making sure we were dressed and fed well, which always included chicken noodle soup on our sick days. After our father passed away in 1994, mom got quite involved with the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store, her bowling league and she truly enjoyed the fellowship of her church family.
Today mom is survived by her sister Hielkje, 6 of her children, 24 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, Andy, her son Gerald, her grandson David, and great-grandchildren Seth and Leah.
As a family we are truly thankful for how God has blessed mom with a grateful life and that God used mom to bless us as family also.
You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence for the family.
