Donald Hutchinson
November 14th, 2018
Donald Hutchinson passed away peacefully on November 14, 2018 at Peace Arch Hospital surrounded by family and close friends.
For 30 years, Don mentored hundreds of students at Langara College and loved nothing better than sharing with them their breakthrough moments with an unwieldy lump of clay. Don spent almost as many years on Granville Island at the studio of his longtime friend Bob Kingsmill. At Kingsmill Studio, Don was able to share his abundant knowledge and stories with anyone who showed an interest in the ceramics world. In 2014 Don was honoured by the city of Surrey with a "Surrey Civic Treasure Award" for his achievements in the ceramic world and his contributions to the arts community of Surrey.
Don's passion, curiosity, humour, wisdom, captivating storytelling abilities and big heart will be forever missed by his many friends and the art communities of Surrey and White Rock. Beloved husband of Louise, amazing dad to Shanna (Michael), Ben and James (Samantha), and cherished Poppa to his four grandchildren Parker, Jack, Bethany and Sofia.
There is no celebration of life planned at this time, but one may possibly be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, any donations to White Rock Hospice in Don’s name would be greatly appreciated.
You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence for the family.
Dear Louise, Shanna Ben James and families. Sending our belated condolences to you all on the death of Don, knowing he will be missed by you all and many friends and community. With fond memories of being neighbors, and catching up from time to time, always Don being a genuine and happy person, and sharing his love and knowledge of his pottery. With love, Sue and Brian McMurdo
