Dr. Richard Chia Luan Ting

On Friday, March 22nd, 2019, Dr. Richard Chia Luan Ting, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 85.

Richard was born in 1934, in Wuwei, a city in Anhui, China.  He was the second youngest of nine children in his family.  He left home at age 16 and travelled to Taiwan in search of a better life.  Despite all hardships, he persevered and graduated from Tunghai University, and won a scholarship to the University of Western Ontario, where he obtained a PhD in Physics.  On December 23rd, 1967, he married his first love, Stella Siew Len Ting.  They raised three children, Jennifer, Jeffrey and Jean.

Richard was passionate about education.  He taught Physics at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, and at Tunghai University in Taiwan for 26 years.  He was well respected by his peers and students.  He instilled in his children the importance of a great education, and made sure he provided them the best opportunities.  Richard was a man of few words, but his actions spoke louder than words.  Over the years, he has made tremendous sacrifices to provide for his family, because family was always his first priority.  Richard’s children and grandchildren were his greatest pride, and he always reminded them to take care of one another.

Richard was a quiet, intelligent and somewhat quirky man who strived to live a simple life.  A typical full day for him could be simply enjoying a cup of coffee and breakfast at McDonald’s with Stella, and leisurely spending an afternoon at the library.  He loved reading and discussing politics with anyone that would engage with him.  He also enjoyed chess, mahjong and sudoku puzzles.  One of his hidden talents was singing Chinese opera.

Richard was predeceased by his father and mother in China.  Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Stella; his children Jennifer (Raymond), Jeffrey (Janice) and Jean (Christopher); his 7 grandchildren Caitlin, Nicole, Isabella, Evan, Mackenzie, Mikaela and Connor; his brother Chia Feng, a sister in China, and many nieces and nephews. 

His Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019 at 11:00 AM at The Tapestry Church at 9280 No. 2 Road, Richmond BC.  His forever home will be at the Boal Chapel & Memorial Gardens in North Vancouver.

The Ting family is truly grateful to the doctors and nurses at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Phoenix and St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver who showed compassion and took great care of Richard. 丁家鸞博士 (Dr. Richard Chia Luan Ting)，體貼慈愛的丈夫和三個孩子的父親，於2019年3月22日星期五逝世，享年85歲。

丁家鸞 (Richard) 於1934年12月20日出生於中國安徽省蕪為縣。他是家裡九個孩子中第二最小的。他16歲離開家，前往台灣尋求更好的生活。儘管困難重重，但他堅持不懈而從東海大學畢業，更獲得了西安大略大學的獎學金，最後榮獲物理學博士學位。 1967年12月23日，他與他的初戀情人李秀蓮 (Stella) 結婚。他們撫養了三個孩子，丁學蘅 (Jennifer)，丁學聖 (Jeffrey)，和丁學詩 (Jean)。

Richard 對教育充滿熱情。他曾在巴西聖保羅大學和台灣東海大學任教26年。他受到同事和學生的尊重。他向孩子們灌輸了良好教育的重要性，並確保他為他們提供了最好的機會。Richard 是一個言辭不多的人，但他的行為勝於言語。多年來，他為家人做出了巨大的犧牲，因為家庭始終是他的第一要務。Richard 的孩子和孫子孫女是他最大的驕傲，他總是提醒他們要互相照顧。

Richard 是一個安靜，聰明，性格獨特的人。他喜歡過簡單的生活。對他來說，典型的一天可能只是在麥當勞和 Stella 享用一杯咖啡和早餐，之後在圖書館度過一個下午。他喜愛閱讀並樂於與任何人討論政治。他還喜歡下棋，打麻將和玩數獨遊戲。他隱藏的才華之一是演唱京戲。

Richard 的父親和母親在中國先逝。Richard 結婚52年的妻子 Stella 會將他深深銘記於心；包括他的孩子 Jennifer (Raymond)，Jeffrey (Janice)，和 Jean (Christopher)；他的7個孫子孫女 Caitlin，Nicole，Isabella，Evan，Mackenzie，Mikaela 和 Connor；他的弟弟丁家鳳，中國的一位姐姐，以及許多侄女和侄子。

他的生命慶典將於2019年4月3日星期三上午11點，在位於 9280 No. 2 Road， Richmond BC 的 Tapestry 教堂舉行。他將安葬於北溫哥華 Boal Chapel & Memorial Gardens。
