Michael Stephen Tivers

March 2nd, 2019

On Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 Staff Sergeant Michael Tivers passed away unexpectedly from a massive heart attack.  Michael was born to Emil (Joe) and Veronica Tivers in Montreal, Quebec in 1960.  He is predeceased by his parents and sister Barbara Trow.  Mike is survived by his loving partner of 31.5 years, Deborah Hidber-Tivers; sons Leeam and Kyran; sister Helen D’Allaire; niece Diane; great-niece Laura and great nephew Matthieu; nephew Marc; brother-in-law George Phillip.

Mike trained as an X-ray Technician in Montreal and worked at three different hospitals prior to joining the RCMP. His first posting was in Smithers, BC where he met Debbie, his future wife. Mike and Debbie moved from Smithers to Abbotsford for a Surrey posting and then returned north for two years service in Terrace.  Their final move was to settle in Surrey while Mike worked at RCMP headquarters. Mike will be remembered as a stalwart member of the RCMP, serving Canada for over 32 years. He had a passion for camping, fishing, baseball, football and hockey, being a die-hard HABS (Montreal Canadiens) fan.  Mike shared these passions with his family, including countless hours in arenas with his boys as both a coach and a supportive parent. Family was always Mike’s priority and he wanted the very best for Deb and their boys. He also valued time spent with dear friends, whether it was in the outdoors, on holidays, or simply enjoying a good meal served with a nice bottle of red wine.  Mike has had a big impact on many people…he is deeply loved and will be forever in our hearts.

Debbie, Leeam and Kyran wish to thank everyone who expressed thoughts, prayers, and acts of kindness during this difficult time.

A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held on Friday, May 10 at 2:00pm.

Messages:

Deb, Just going over old pictures of Mike. Thinking about him today and sending you love. No words can express how it feels to lose Mike. I hope you are doing ok. I hope 2020 can be a positive and loving year for you and the boys. Xxoo Liz

Mike was a great friend!!! A gentle soul. There is no more I can say than he will be sorely missed. I enjoyed our time togehter especially our conversations about sports and politics. Mike was very informed on any topic we argued about. He always knew that deep in his heart I was always right and he was always wrong. He never wanted to admit it but he knew it. He was my brother .

Debbie, Leeam and Kyran. Our hearts are heavy but we are so glad we got to know you all. Living next door to Ted and Anne, it was always so nice to see you when we visited. It seemed like it was always "Happy Hour" with lawn chairs sitting between the 2 homes and fun, friendly conversations going on for hours. Good times, great company, and a lifetime of shared memories. Ken, Simone, Sydney, Sabrina, and Harrison Merkl

I have known Mike since the early 90's when he first arrived at Surrey Detachment. He was at first a difficult dude to engage, but once you earned his trust there was nothing he wouldn't do for you. "Tivers from Smithers" is what I used to call him. He wrote the book on "courage of conviction"...his battles with RCMP brass are legendary. I regret the fact that several weeks before his passing I ran into him at TH's and agreed to meet him in the near future for coffee. Than meeting never happened. I'll end this with some lyrics of a song by Styx that Mike always referenced during our days at Surrey GD: "I look to the sea, the reflections in the waves spark my memory, some happy, some sad, I think of childhood friends, and the dreams we had...". You had "dreams" Mike...and they all came true. RIP buddy. Phil S.

So sorry for your loss, Our deepest condolences to you and your family. Sharon and Lap

Our deepest condolences to Debbie Leeam and Kyran. We miss seeing Mike in his shorts at the rink. Lots of good memories of your Dad, and endearing qualities he had that make us smile remembering him. He loved you all so much.

The Tivers Family, a loving father and husband, gone much too soon. Our hearts are with you as you adjust to living without Mike. May your many memories of time spent together ease your grief and sadness as you mourn this unexpected loss.

The most apparent thing to us is how much Mike was devoted to his family. He was such a strong figure in the development of his two boys. We’ve watched them grow up to be the kind, intelligent, motivated young men they are today. We could see how much he loved his family and how much he’ll be missed by them.

Since I know Mike he was one of best honest and really reliable person to share all kinds of feelings with him, when he drove us to Prince George for hockey trip became best friend which we miss him and specially for his family big loss and really hard to handle and we pray to god to help family for going through this hard time

Debbie, Leeam & Kyran, We are deeply sorry to hear of your loss, our sincere condolences on the passing of Mike. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

I had the opportunity to spend a week’s vacation with Mike , my brother who introduced me for the first time in Arizona. We had a great memorable time, golfing, catching 2 NHL Hockey games; Canucks and the Habs and a baseball spring season game. Mike was a gentle Giant and a good soul. Condolences to the boys, Debbie, family and friends. He will be missed and forever in our hearts

Debbie, Leeam & Kyran, We are deeply sorrowed to hear of Mike’s passing. Mike was a great guy who we will remember fondly and shared many hockey memories with. Love The Dragers (and Gary)
