Michael Townley Potts
May 25th, 2022
Our beloved brother, uncle and friend, quietly left this world in his 69th year on May 25th, 2022. After contacting Covid in April, Michael was unable to overcome complications and his lungs had nothing left to give.
He is survived by brother Tom (Helen), sister Terri (Chuck) niece Katie (Rylan), nephews Scott (Julie), James (Erin), Daniel and Michael, great nephews Oliver, Greyer, and Harrison and great nieces Senna and Emily. He was predeceased by his parents, Doris Aileen Potts (Malm) (2013) and James Townley Potts (2000).
Michael devoted many years to union causes and was the president of CUPE 407 serving the Vancouver School District.
Among his many pursued interests, Michael was a photographer, bread baker, wine maker, book collector, gardener and fisherman. He enjoyed music, playing banjo, reading and cooking. Photography was a lifelong passion and he took pleasure in finding the extraordinary in ordinary things. He felt at home outdoors and his photos reflect that. Michael loved ocean fishing and he enjoyed many camping trips to Bere Point in Sointula, BC with his brother Tom and family.
Mike enjoyed all family dinners and celebrations. In his last few years, his great nieces and nephews brought him great joy and he often brought them his great bread!
This loss is felt deeply by his family and friends. We will miss his big hearted laugh, positive spirit and warm hugs. There will be a private family gathering to honour Michael.

Our hearts are heavy as we say our final farewell to our friend Mike. Our deepest condolences to all the family, friends and everyone he touched throughout his life. Blessings on your journey home. You will be remembered fondly and dearly missed. Love, David and Bernadette Ford and Family
I can't believe he is gone. I have known Mike since high school. He was going to photograph my wedding but had health issues. I last caught up with him a couple of years ago at the Billy Miner Pub for a drink and a bite to eat. It was great to catch up on each others lives over the last 50 years. He will be missed.
Those eyes! I was smitten when I first met Michael at age 5. So sad for this loss of this lovely man and grateful that I have been able to keep in touch over the many years of knowing him.
A great pal for many years. From being on the CUPE executive at the VSB to blowing giant bubbles to photograph, talking about the esoteric and cosmic for hours, picking blackberries for his amazing wines or growing giant sunflowers, always a fun guy. A gentle fellow with a huge heart. Going to miss you my friend,,,, Into the light.
Hello Terri hope you are doing well. very sorry to hear the passing of your brother Micheal. when I was working I occasionally saw him at the school. Stay safe and healthy!!! Condolences, Rod
So sorry to hear of Michael’s passing. I was lucky enough to have met him for different reasons while I was working in the CUPE Regional office. He was a great activist and a very nice man. My deepest sympathies to his family and close friends. Rest peacefully Brother
We had the great pleasure to meet Mike when our daughter was welcomed into the Potts family, several years ago. When we went to visit James and Erin at their home, often times we would step into the house with the wonderful smells of bread baking. We knew we may get lucky enough to have a taste. Mike welcomed us as part of the family as all the Potts’ did. We will miss his warm and wonderful smile, his knowledge of “everything “
WOW will miss lots about you, seeing your food posts ,photographs ,comments on the stupid stuff I post on fb. We had some great times though making and drinking wine and beer.
RIP Michael it was great to know you and work with you. My Condolences to all the family. Prayers and strength for where you need it.
Michael was a member of our group for several years. He had an amazing personality and lit up the room whenever he entered. He will be missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. He always said he would "show me" how to make drinking alcohol from old records as they used to do onboard dry fishing boats! Hahaha. Never had the chance to see it being done, so will need to wait until the next life. God speed! Richard & UFO*BC crew.
